Selling guns that might be banned now, instead of later?

What do you highroaders think about the wisdom in holding onto guns/magazines likely to be banned under a new AWB in the hopes of them significantly appreciating in value like under the 94' ban? Do you think all those people that bought 20 ARs and are now sitting on them waiting for the ban are being foolish? Or is it a "sure thing"-like money in the bank so to speak?
Just curious as I have a few things that I have been wanting to unload because they don't "do it" for me anymore, and I was wondering if now was the time to sell or should I wait for greener pastures?

I think you should sell them to me dirt cheap, that is just my opinion though.

If you dont want to hold on to them, Sell it. Otherwise store the things until a actual ban falls into place however long it takes.

Sometimes farmer sees crop rot if he waits too long for nice pricing at the elevator to go up.

From a capitalist perspective, yeah, if you think an AWB is coming (and it allows people to transfer grandfathered rifles) then go ahead. That's just good business sense to buy low, sell high. Personally, I don't think they'll be able to pass a ban before 2011, but that's arguable.

On the other hand, don't be surprised when you get a lot of dirty looks for being "that jerk," if you know what I mean. It's like the Hannah Montana craze from not long ago; it may be a good business idea to buy all the tickets you can and scalp them for outrageous profit, but it won't win you any friends. As someone who loves capitalism (but has a soul), I'd urge you to get what you want to own in the case that it is banned, but don't horde it all away so that new shooters get left high and dry. I want as many people as possible to own ARs and AKs right now, not after they're banned. The more people who own them, the more persuasive the argument that they can't be banned because they're too common (a la Heller). So yeah, if you think there's going to be a ban, I don't blame you for picking up an extra rifle or two, but don't be "that guy," okay?

if you really think it is something likely to be banned and would like to profit from that, it would be best to hold onto it.. however, I would not suggest buying everything you can find that is THOUGHT to be banned in order to turn a profit eventually as it may just end in you having to sell a lot of guns you , for which you overpaid, at a much lower price.

The longer we go without a new AWB, the less likely one will happen.


Frankly Obama and his ilk have 2 years to get one passed because I predict they will lose the house and/or the senate and then chances of a new AWB drop near zero (until next time they take control of the house, senate and whitehouse).

sell it now, it's a seller's market as we speak. In addition, I'm no fan of sitting on guns, collecting dust. If you ain't using them, sell them and put the money towards something you will get more use out of and enjoy.

For my part, if I don't want it, I sell it. Also, I don't jack-up the price. I simply seek to recover my investment. Given the current hyper-prices, it has been fairly easy to do just that...recover my investment. JMHO.

Definitely a sellers market now.

Guns will always appreciate in value. Even a crappy 1950's shotgun that used to cost $20 will cost $100 now. Guns will ALWAYS be worth something and while they may go down in the short term, but in the long term they'll definitely double in value.

I don't sell guns anymore. I sold several through the years and have at some point regretted selling almost all of them, so when I buy one, I intend on keeping forever. So I say buy what you need/want. Nothing more nothing less.

Another thought. You can transfer (Gift) to family members and trusted friends or a chosen few who may not otherwise have the financial power to buy a nice weapon. That way, you dont have unwanted weapons sitting gathering dust and also maybe improve your overall family's house coverage and even perhaps generate a new activity everyone can do together going the range.

Having more guns sitting about than you can use also establishes you as a potential invasion target with the goal of these weapons to be stolen and sold off for finaincial gain with you dead or out of the picture for a long time.

Something to think about.

If you recover the money that you paid on these unwanted weapons? Great! use it to further support the weapons you do intend to keep by getting ammuntion or taking care of debts or savings etc against a uncertian future.

When most modern battle rifles were declared evil, up here, their values dropped significantly. No new buyers allowed into the market. Sales and trading between permit holders only.
"...Obama and his ilk have..." I'd bet they don't much care about firearms right now. The economy has their primary attention. Banning a bunch of firearms will throw a whole lot of people out of work. No way King Obama wants to be seen as causing more job losses.

If they go full bore (which they'd have to do since the '94 ban was such an abysmal failure) you won't be able to sell them. So buy tons of $1,600 AR-15s now and be stuck with them forever. For a gunny, that's no big deal, more shooting fun for a long time. For someone who doesn't care about guns and is looking to make a buck it will be a big disappointment and loss and they'll get what they deserve.
But I'm biased and have no respect for people profiting on our rights.

The problem lies in not knowing if the next ban will prevent transfer. There will be another ban, of this I am certain. I think they are just trying to win our confidence so that they can maintain control next year. If they do(maintain control), there will almost certainly be a ban of some sort. Be vigilant gentlemen.

I really hope there will not be another ban. But if there is and they do make it illegal to transfer or sell them, as soon as word gets out that you would not be able to sell, the people with lots of merchandise who were just in it for a profit would be in a mad scramble to unload .

Most likely at VERY attractive prices to people like myself and others who would love to be stuck with those guns for the duration of the ban.

Some of you fellas have hit on a good point. The ability to legally transfer these weapons after a ban is a rumor that I have heard about quite a few times. So do you think that a new AWB would be likely to contain that little extra nugget absent from the last one? In other words, no transfer of firearm parts, let alone firearms without an FFL? I think that's more of a concern to me over whether the ban will come or not. I'm just about certain that it will come. Even if the Dems lost the midterms, (which doesn't at all look certain) I'm sure the leadership would sneek that in before they actually left office.

I'm more concerned over even being able to transfer without an FFL.

Well it would be all just a wild guess, but there is some guidance available by looking at the wording of the last attempt, HR1022 from 2007.

It died before getting out of committee but it's the first post-Clinton attempt at a ban.

It addresses lots of things the first one didn't, like this transfer issue.

HR1022 did grandfather ownership of the banned items, but required a background check to transfer one, effectively ending private sales of the banned items.

In addition, it made "accessories" banned as well, so even things like uppers or barrels would have to be transferred through a dealer pretty much killing off the aftermarket.

Important thing is to not let it happen, not to plan for what to do if it does.

BHO has a very large ego. He wants to be a 2 term president. I don't see him pushing for it until after the 2012 elections. Either way it (the election) goes, he'll have nothing to lose at that point. If he loses he'll only have 2.5 months to get the rest of his agenda accomplished. And God forbid he wins, the election is over with, and there'd be nothing we could do about it.

But if both houses of the congress push it through, who knows what he'll do. It would be a coin toss between his ego and his extremist agenda.

Personally whenever the AWB #2 comes around, and I believe it will given time, I don't see them letting anything be grandfathered in. For this simple reason, I have failed to get into the EBR frenzy. (Plus I like walnut and blueing a whole lot better.) Which tended to save me money in the last 5 months. I've bought 3 S&W revos, for less than the price of one EBR. And one of those was $800 OTD.
