I have only owned Handguns, aside from a few bolt action hunting rifles and was interested in a semi auto rifle for SD and $%#@ hits the fan scenarios but I have no idea where to begin. I just want something that is not expensive $500 and under and very reliable and has a decent fire rate along with some range. Can anyone reccomend some affordable options? Plus, any online stores and resources would be appreciated since there are not many dealers around me. Thanks

SKS is probably one of only a few semi autos for under $500 right now. J&G Sales has the CAI AK 74 Tantal for $489. A used Mini 14, or if you can find a good deal on a used AK or AR...Not a whole lot right now for under $500. Keep in mind you'll need to practice and feed it and surplus 5.45x39mm is pretty cheap compared to most other ammo.

Your $500 would buy an SKS and a supply of ammo. It would also buy a Saiga (in 223 or 7.62x39) a spare mag and a few boxes of ammo.

Google SKS or Saiga for suppliers.

SKS, some AK47's and Saiga are about the only options at that price point. Keltec SU16's are right around your max and worth looking at. They use standard AR mags which are (usually) widely available. I have two of the SU's, and although not as sturdy as an SKS they work fine and are very reliable. Also usually more accurate than the others.
