shaved bullet shootable?

Is a .45acp 200gr hornady fmj t/c shootable if it is slightly shaved when loaded. I loaded about 10 rounds and noticed/felt it slight shave 2 of the rounds. It left a little ring of metal. I pulled one and noticed it's slightlymshaved at the bottom. The rings of metal that were shaved off look like a little pieces of hair. Can this bullet be reloaded? does the other one need to be pulled?

picture? i'm not a reloader, but i dont see why it wouldnt be safe, as long as the bullet seats well and is flush with the brass all around.

The golden rule of reloading is, when in doubt, throw it out.

That said, personally, I wouldn't worry about it if there's just a hair-thin little ring of lead shaved off the bottom. They're probably fine. Just bell the rest of your cases a little more.

have you miced the bullets?

its not un heard of for some 45 colt bullets( .454) in some 45 acp bullets ( .451.)

Tiny sliver of lead that you could wipe off with your finger? Shoot it. Next time put a bit more bell on the case and pay a bit more attention to getting the bullet started straight. No biggie.

they are fmj, so its actually a hairline sliver of the jacket. also, the bullets are .451

Test drop the loaded rounds in your chamber (barrel removed from pistol). If there are chambering problems due to the ring of lead at the case mouth (and there's a good chance there will be), you can use a utility knife to "pare" the sliver of lead off. As was pointed out, opening up the case mouth flair should solve the problem. Also, with lead bullets, I like to seat and taper crimp in separate operations as opposed to seating/taper crimping in the same operation.

im am not using lead, they are full metal jacket bullets and the shaving is a piece of the fmj bullet, which is falling on the press after i resize. They seat fine in the barrel

The cartridges you describe are safe, but their accuracy may be impaired.

The cartridge gauge is your friend: If the cartridge will fit in the gauge, it should chamber in your firearm.

Cartridge gauges are available from the "usual sources".

+1 with Walkalong, fire the rounds and consider it part of your learning curve.

1. Chamfer the insides of the case mouths.
If the cases aren't chamfered, you can get the shaving just as the taper crimp squeezes the case mouth down on the bullet before it is fulley seated the last few thousandths.

2. Bell the cases a tad more.
You should be able to start the bullet in the belled case far enough it won't fall out on it's own.

so here is what i did today. I reloaded the bullet i had pulled that had a little shaved off the bottom. I went the range and shot all 10 (8 non shaved-2 shaved) I shot from a rest and noticed no difference in accuracy...granted i was shooting from the 7 yard marker. Thanks rcmodel, i will take your advice...it looks like the chamfering the case and taking extra care to make sure the bullet is seating straight is the answer for me. I already flare the case mouth, but i may need to look into flariing just a tad more. Thanks guys.
