Greetings,
I am finding that Shok-Buffs have a vastly shorter life span in my 10mm, as compared to my .45s.

Which brand have you found lasts the longest in your 1911-style 10mm guns?

Honestly - - -

- - -I don't think I've tried any other than the Wilson brand. They last a LONG time with hardball equivalent handloads, though.

What brand have you been using? Do you have a figure on the number of 10mms it takes to "use one up?" I've never kept track, really - - I just glance at the one in use when I clean the pistol, and replace when it starts getting doggy-looking.

Best,
Johnny

Why use buffs in the first place?

They'd shorten the slide's rearward motion thereby increasing the shock effect. Also hampers the ability of the slide stop to 'catch' the notch, unless the plug itself is shortened a notch or two...

CP Tuff Buffs. The newer Wilson buffs will fray and tear far too easily in my experience. Heitt buffs are supposed to be good. You can get either one from Brownells.

Buffs work fine if you aren't using a short-slide gun and don't shoot 10,000 rounds between cleanings. I've tried my best to shoot them to pieces and failed.

The arrangement recommended to me by several pistolsmiths for a 10mm gun is a 20 pound recoil spring with a buffer, or 18.5 if you shoot mostly lighter loads.

I used the Wilsons for a short time then realized I didn't need them  Maybe if I was using a steady diet of +P's or 45 supers but not in the loads I was using.

Classic.

The Wilson buffs are far too soft. I think that's so they sell more of them. ;)

I still use the Wilson buffs in my CQB because I have quite a few but when using full power ammo, not +P, I only get 5-600 rounds on a buff. That's one range session at very best.

When I run out of them I'll use the CPs.

I use the CP Tuff Buffs and a 20 lb. Wolff spring in my Colt DE and after 500 rounds of FULL power 10mm ammo, they have a long way to go.

Wilson buffers must have changed. Back when they came out they lasted FOREVER!!!! I guess I am glad I bought a supply then instead of now......

I used some Buffalo brand that were good, seemed to be a clear nylon type of material. I have done away with the practice as I don't see much of a need. My Colt Autos perk along fine without em.

CP Tuff-Buffs are the best to use. Don't use any buffs in the super compact 1911's because the slide is too short and just that little width of the Buff will throw off the timing cycle of the gun. I use them in my full sized 1911's and my Colt Commander.

CP Buffs are the only ones made using their hard nylon (?) material. They are actually made by my gun range, Classic Pistol (CP) in Southampton, PA, which also makes CP Bullets ammo. The Buffs are hard and last long but still absorb the shock of the slide hitting the frame. The Wilson Buffs are much too soft and will tear in just a few hundred rounds. If you forget to change the Wilson Buffs there is the chance that they will fall apart and pieces can end up somewhere in the gun.

Siggyboy: Are the CP Buffs the ones with a picture of a buffalo? That sounds like the buffs I had.

Yes the buffalo buffs! Very durable. Use them in a 10mm with full house loads.:D
