While contemplating my next rifle purchase, I am wondering if it is OK to shoot .17 Mach 2 in a .17 HMR barrel? I am planning to get a bolt action, so cycling/ejecting should not be a problem. Are those two cartridges the same head size? Any thoughts?

You can see from this, especially the second one, that the HMR is much longer than the HM2. I understand that, not only will the HM2 case split at the area where it is unsupported, the bullet may obturate early and cause very high pressures. Not a good idea.

I believe this idea surfaces every once in a while, driven by folks who don't like the high price of HMR ammunition.

As far as I know, you need a second rifle. HM2 doesn't work in a HMR chamber, regardless of action type. This isn't .38 Special in a .357 Magnum. :)

since rimfires headspace off the rim, you are asking for trouble; now then, if you get a 17mach 2 rifle, and buy eley or remmy ammo for it, this ammo is hotter loaded than other mach 2 ammo, about 200 fps faster, which brings the speed up to about 2300 fps, even more, in a very well made bbl.
also if you get a mach 2 rifle, ammo is about 1/3 the price, of hmr , especially if you buy a case of it at a time from ammuntitiontogo.com. tell them you are a rfc(rimfirecentral) site member, and want the good deal on eley m2 ammo, and it is yours, for 139. a case, plus real world shipping, which he told me, is less than 15 bucks, all the way to vermont or maine.
Lastly, if you get a m2 rifle, you can fire 17 aguila ammo through it; this is a true 22lr case, but with a longer bullet. not only that , it is a 20 grain, full metal jacket, boattail bullet, that does about 2000 fps from your bbl. this will drill tiny holes through small game, without blowing them up like the other bullets may.
this is good, if you wanna keeps skins, save meat, or the like. they may or may not shoot real accurate from your rifle, you just have to see. I have a ruger in 77/17mach 2, that actually shoots the aggie ammo, tighter than regular mach 2 ammo, and that is sub moa as it is , allready!!! schwing!!!!

Except, in this case, it's more like bolting 454 Chevy heads to a 289 Ford block!

I guarantee you that a HM2 will load and shoot out of a HMR bolt. But I would not recommend it.

You can get HM2's very easy so you should do it the safe way.

If you get a new rifle for 300 dollars that is about 20 boxes of HMR and 75 boxes of HM2

See how silly that sounds?

Not really.

Armed 24/7, just go with what others have said, and buy a rifle chambered in .17HM2 instead.

Ford and Chevy use diffirent bolt patterns and head sizes, sorta like diffirent case head sizes and case lengths...

Oh, and Armed 24/7, i agree with the others, buy a new rifle.

I can fit a honda manifold on my dodge, just takes some welding and drilling. Not any reason you can't put a ford head on a chebby block, just takes time and money.

Hmr/hm2

Hi,
Going back to basics, remember the Hmr is based off the .22WMR case while the Hm2 is based off the .22lr case. As in these two cartridges, the .22lr will fire in the .22WMR usually resulting with case splitting and jamming, would hardly expect anything different with the HMR/HM2.

plus with the hmr rounds, you are talking about twice the chamber pressure being created, as opposed to the 22 / 22 mag rounds, so again, i would not do it. get a 17mach 2...

I wouldnt shoot a 380 out of a 9mm....

do NOT try it. I have a .17HMR, I would never compramise the saftey of myself, others, and the firearm, to try and shoot something else out of it, other than what its ment for.
