I was told that if you shoot a CZ 75 or similarly designed gun sideways or "full homie", there's a real risk of breaking the slide release. I've not found anything on the net about this so would like some thoughts.

As a disclaimer, I've no intention of making this style of shooting a main feature of my repertoire ;)

Sounds highly improbable.

The knuckle on top position cants the pistol about 45 degrees and is sometimes used for cross dominant shooters like my wife and a couple of my shooting students. She and another shoot CZ 75s without any problem or damage to the guns and she has easily a couple of thousand through her's.

I gotta assume that the "logic" behind that theory is based upon an exaggerated importance of gravity upon the stop.

Wouldn't even be a pre-commercial spoiler for "myth busters" to tackle.

I would think it would not be very accurate that way.

For sure, if you're shooting gangster style, but not just by virtue of the gun being on it's side. Laying in urban prone or urban fetal I can shoot just as accurate as standing.

Canting the gun will have no effect upon the slide stop. (The force that affects the slide stop is the slide slamming back to the front after each shot; tilting the gun doesn't change how the slide stop and barrel lugs contact each other...)

If you don't shoot a lot one-handed, and find yourself having to do so, canting the gun a little -- maybe an inch off vertical (as in the IDPA qualifier, when you must shoot one-handed with both your strong and weak hand) -- but that's NOT the same as using the "gangsta" style we see in TV and movies.

Too much cant and the gun doesn't drop back down as it would normally. Shooting gansta-style is just plan impractical and stupid.

There is so much internet discussion of how CZ-75 slide stops will explode if you even think about running a box of ammunition through them, it doesn't surprise me to hear that stories about the slide stop issue are evolving.

I shoot more accurately weak handed with a 30 degree cant during our matches.

Indeed. Most competition shooters know that when shooting with the weak-hand you can control recoil better by using a 30-45 degree cant. I don't mind doing so at matches but I swear it makes me self-conscious when practicing weak-hand shooting just at the regular range, as I'm always thinking others are looking at me and assuming I'm trying to shoot "gangsta style".

People are idiots that make up things just to sound smart. I've heard so much BS from gun owners (almost as much as from non gun owners) that I try to take everything said with a grain of salt.

Someone stated in a recent on "natural point of aim" thread that if you stand and just point your finger at a distant object, your hand will have a slight natural cant to it. That never really entered my mind as I was a competitive Bullseye shooter and never canted my shooting arm. This tip will be a great aid in me teaching my students strong hand/weak hand shooting techniques. hso on this forum a few responses up added to my education by offering possible help to those who are cross eye dominate using a slight cant to offset the dominate eye issue. Thank you. 68 and still learning.

This is likely to be carryover of what went on 25 years ago before the wide body 1911 mutants came out and before 9mm Major 175 was disallowed in USPSA.

There were some real CZ75s and a lot of Tanfoglios shot at 9mm Major for the capacity advantage versus single stack .38 Supers until the practice was banned. This was very hard on the guns, which they normally showed by breaking slide stops. Since the usual technique in USPSA is to speed load before the magazine is empty, it was quite common for CZ-TZ shooters to just use a straight pin of the appropriate diameter without a slide stop lever at all.

I read that if the gun is "properly timed" it will not break slide stops with the heaviest of loads, but saw and reliably heard of enough broken slide stops to know that the average mass produced pistol of the type was not specifically set up for overloads.

That is NOT a problem with any standard 9mm load, but once a story gets on the www, it gets entrenched.

That could mean any gun with a slide stop or maybe just CZs, Tanfoglios, the IMI guns, etc. Any of the many CZ clones.

We read it on the internet so it must be true.

Its useful to ask about such rumors though. When I hear a story and after thinking about it something seems off to it, I like to ask.

At 25 yards and more a canted hold will alter your sight alignment. You also have more luxury of time compared to gunfighting. This hold is best used for fast and close one-handed shooting.
