Next week I'm on vacation at HOLDEN BEACH, NC.
The closest range I can find is 50 miles away. It's a pain.
So, I see on google maps there is plenty of open space much closer :)

So, is it legal for me to just drive out of town, park on the side of the road, and shoot?

Not sure of the legalities, but it doesn't sound like a great idea.

Maybe you could find someone with a pasture or a field and ask their permission to use their property for a little target practice (of course you will pick up the spent casings and targets afterwards).

As a land owner outside of city limits in NC, I have no problem with going out back and shooting, but I don't think it would be wise to shoot by the road or on a piece of property where the owner is not aware.

Another option is just to wait until you are somewhere where you know you can legally shoot.

    Good luck!

Hell no I wouldn't just pull off the side of the road and start shooting, In my county the land owner is likely to start shooting back :what::what:

I hope you don't automatically assume that unposted land is a free-for-all zone, like the poachers that walk up on me when I'm still hunting on my 200 acres. And the road hunters have fired more than once over my head close enough to hear the bullet buzz by.

But some even claim they didn't remember crossing a farm fence topped with barbed wire they had to cross to enter !

Any public land I've seen has signs stating so, but to assume shooting across it is kosher without checking who else might be enjoying it is a recipe for disaster.

There is a game land about 15 miles from Holden Beach called green swamp. I have been there a few times and they permit rifles for hunting. They shouldnt give you any trouble for doing some target shooting as I have never seen any other people out there the several time I went. It is off HWY 211. If you are coming from Wilmington you will make a right (onto 211 Green Swamp Rd) at the Hardies (or Wendys) and go down about 5 miles. To go to Holden Beach you would make a left on to 211 (Southport Supply Rd)

I called the wildlife agents in Brunswick county a few years ago and confirmed that it was open Mon-Sat and rifles were allowed. You can call them again to make sure for yourself. If I were down there this week I wouldnt mind meeting you and showing you personally but I will not be down that way for a while.

    I hope this helps

not sure, but its likely the landowner might be surprised and unaware of who you are or what you are doing there will start shooting back

Why would you even ask such a question?

ditto #2, always seek out the landowner and ask permission. the state area sounds OK but you should check, if it's 'game lands' mgt area then almost sure will be rimfire only.
