Shooting less due to high gas prices and ammo cost?

Gas hasn't cut down on my shooting at all since the range is about two miles away. It has cut down on my golfing sice the course is 20mi away. At least next year the course 5mi away will be done.

Believe it or not, I am shooting more now but just doing it differently.
Bought .22LR conversion kits for my AR's,1911's and Glocks. Shoot a lot for cheap.

As for saving gas, I have cut down on range trips from several a week to once a week.
The largest part of my shooting is now at home in my yard or garage with AirSofts. I shoot twice a day at home and have put over 7,000 rds. through one of my AirSoft Glocks. Another Glock has over 4,000 through it.

I use Coleman Propane Bottles to power the pistols and can get around 6,000 rds. per bottle in this hot season. The number may come down when it gets cold.
My mags hold 20 rds. and I can shoot over three mags(60+ rds.) with one 6 second charge

Pinned down!

No pin shooting for me this month.

:(

The match is two hours away, so I'm on the every-other-month plan now. I'll go to the indoor range 5 miles from my house this weekend.

It hasn't really affected me at all, I can use my neighbors 80 acres for shooting pretty much anytime I want.:D I also reload all of my 40 S&W ammo, which is running 12 cents/round, I'm shooting 250 rounds/month and not going broke.:D:neener:

I cut back on groceries and electricity usage. The wife gets no more spending cash for shopping. My 2 year old son will be getting a job soon.

Daddy will keep shooting. He will increase if possible, depending on Junior's income.

:p:p:p:p:p:p:p:p:p:p:p:p:p:p:p:p:p:p.......;)

I'm going to the range less often, partially because of gas prices. When I do go (once or twice a month) I typically shoot over $100 worth of ammo (sometimes $200 if I bring both a .45LC and a .357) -- that I loaded myself for about $8 :neener:

When I'm done, I try to take home at least as much brass and lead as what I brought with me.

El Tejon, thanks for the welcome!

Been busy with college at FSU(Panama City Campus) and work. Only one year left and I'll have my a BS in Criminal Justice. It will take me until age 40, but better late than never!

As for ammo costs, I've decided to rummage through my "gun room" and sell off all the items that just collect dust.

I've been shooting more .22 and bought an Airsoft. If you collect the Airsoft BBs you can re use them.
But I do shoot center fire stuff or blackpowder some, just not as often.

Gas isn't an issue for me; the range is fairly close since we moved. I am shooting less centerfire as a rule, but I still haul out the big guys from time to time. Luckily, I've always had a bug for .22, so I'm good for now.

I saw the ammo/guns price starting to increase last Nov. so I bought my last gun and then a reloading equipment around that time. Nice thing about my situation is I get to work at a pretty busy private shooting range so all my brass is, well free for the most part.
I'm also betting it'll get worse after Jan, 09. I don't think the next President will interfere with 2nd rights but there's nothing I've found that says he can't limit, restrict, or tax on ammunition. So I'm glad I got all the stuff I need to reload my own.

I have been shooting more 22LR and conserving my centerfire ammo inventory. Gas prices are dropping. Noticed $3.48/gal on my way home from work today.

I'm definately not shooting any less. I am doing just the opposite. Other forms of entertainment have gone up also so I'm just giving up other fields of fun so I can focus more on my shooting interests.

I'm also betting it'll get worse after Jan, 09.

I don't think that our next President, John McCain, will do anything to hurt the hunting, shooting, self-protection or defense of a just gov't. He seems to have a good head on his shoulders and is ahead in the polls, also.

Please don't be a dooms-day sooth-sayer by thinking that it's a for gone conclusion that B. Hussain Obama will get elected.

The 22's have the range

I was at a range introducing a friend to shooting. Took along a 22lr rifle, 9mm handgun, and a 12 ga over under. The 22 was a pawn shop find and had to sight it in on the handgun's 25 yard range before moving to the longer ranges. When i get over to the rifle range.... there's 6 tables and 4 people on the tables are shooting 22's. I will admit it is fun to shoot targets 100-125 yards away with a 22.
To get your money's worth when shooting take someone who thinks it's as easy as that video game. My friend probably is still grinning.

MinnMooney, sorry that this is OT, but has anyone else noticed what you get if you scramble Obama's Initials?

BHO = HBO :D

Back on Topic, Diesel Prices (I drive a Diesel) have cut my shooting off at the knees, hopefully though that will change soon as I now have a New Higher paying job with better hours (Need to fix my truck a bit first though where I shoot is 3 miles up a 4wd trail, and my outer ball joints are shot.)

Having time is my biggest reason for cutting back.

As far as volume ammo, I've discovered 5.45x39 to replace 5.56/.223 (now own 2 AK74 with another one on the way and waiting on a 5.45 AR upper) and steel case 9mm to replace the brass .40 and .45. I have a .22LR but actually don't use them as much as I thought I would, probably because I don't have any "cool" guns to run it in yet.

Strangely I've also picked up .308 dispite the cost. I picked up a good bit of "junk" (read: ruff surplus) .308 that's ran fine through my PTR-91 and steel case .308 will continue to feed it after all that's gone. I intend to reload .308 for my AR10 which is for shooting tiny groups and sees maybe 20 rounds a range session.

Of course I have steel .223 and 7.62x39 to feed the AKs and ARs but due to cost even of "cheap" steel case, they don't see as much action. .40 and .45 are pretty much collecting dust right now and only get used as carry and home defense pieces.

Around here it seems like the same guys show up, but in fewer vehicles. One guy's SUV, after delivering a full load of shooters to a steel match, has been labeled 'the clown car'.

A couple that shoots at our IDPA league bought a Smart Fortwo this year, which looks especially funny out in the boonies among the Suburbans and the F350s.

I drive about 120 miles round trip every Wednesday for IDPA. I did it alone for years, but it turns out one of the other shooters lives two blocks from me AND reloads .357, so now I drive my 32 mpg Saturn, he leaves his Jeep at home and pays me in ammo. Win win!

Yep. I could barely afford to shoot when 9mm was $7/box and gas was $2.75/gal. I think it's been four months since I've been out, and over a year before that. I'm planning on learning to reload though, and make more money :D

NO

I drive a hair-shirt, low-ball, short-cab, 4-cylinder Ranger that serves my needs just fine. Thank you! It also beats its old-standard, EPA numbers every week. I've got the gas thing covered as well as anybody can while still driving a pickup truck.

I don't know how many more times I'm going to have to tell folks to learn to reload centerfire cartridges. Yes, component prices have risen. Clue: component prices have risen every year since I started reloading in 1980.:scrutiny:

I consume a MINIMUM of 500 centerfire handgun cartridges per month. Centerfire rifle use is spotty but averages at least 100 cartridges per month. --occasionally MUCH more. . . .

I haven't really cut down on shooting just now the three of us (2 buddies and I) all hop in my uneconomical v8 and head out to the range in 1 vehicle instead of 2 or 3.....now if only i could get my lazy friend to clean out his "backseat" in his ranger then we can take that to the range!! the fact that we reload our .45 acp rounds helps us out otherwise there would be no way we could afford the 100-200 rounds per person per outting and the monthly IDPA matches we like to participate in. if we are figuring everything right we're reloading for about $11-13 per 100 rounds and as per checking wally world their 100rnds were about $30 so i figure we're still coming out ahead
