Shooting on Private Property

I know that rules on shooting firearms will come from local county and city governments, but can anyone recommend a general source on this subject? Can one safely make some generalizations about states in which shooting on private property is allowed or barred? I am particularly interested in the rules in Cheatham County, Tennessee. Does anyone shoot on private property in this county or have some first-hand knowledge of the issues or problems?

I'm not sure about Cheatham, but over here in the NW corner if you're outside of city limits it's technically legal on private property. That doesn't mean you won't get the sheriff called on you if the noise is disturbing nearby neighbors. You may want to call the county sheriff there for more info, but I'd do it anonymously and expect resistance.

Call the local sheriffs office and ask. I don't think you'll get hassled.
I had a new neighbor call the police on me for shooting on my private property. I live in a rural area outside Seattle, and had always shot on my property. It seems as if the county changed the zoning on shooting. The cop just called my house and explained it and said he understood how it was too bad "city folks" were moving into the country areas and spoiling it. He was pretty cool about it.

Southwest Cheatham County

Recently there was a meeting of some homeowners upset with gunfire close to their homes <300 feet. They wanted to ban gunfire in this "subdivision".
Most of the properties here are 1-3 acres.

A group of responsible gun owners met with two county commissioners to put in our 2 cents worth. We argue that there is no need to pass new laws, reckless endangerment would cover unsafe shooting.

I see Rutherford county just passed up banning shooting!

Check your county ordnances and see what they are. If it's not listed, then it's legal.

Dude you have posted this question on at least two seperate message boards. you need to call the county sherrifs office and ask. How about calling you county commissioner or even going to one of their meetings?

It is not that hard to get answers, really.

I would also check the BATF website for your states laws. The ATF does do a good job of consolidating the laws and you can read for yourself what is legal and not.

There are no laws or ordinances against shooting on private property, here in Cheatham co.
( I shoot in my back yard any time I please. Have for many years now. )

Might be some city ordinance against shooting in Ashland City, Pegram, Kingston Springs, Pleasantview, etc. that I'm unaware of, however.

Dude you have posted this question on at least two seperate message boards. you need to call the county sherrifs office and ask.

I used to work for the S.O. here.
Good luck getting straight answers out of anybody that answers the phones there. Best bet would be to call the D.A.'s office, or talk to any one of the dozens of attorneys that can be found around the city square.
Or better yet, catch one of the deputies or city officers, and ask them.

Every time I've needed to research it, I've simply looked up the city ordinances, usually provided on the city hall page for that county. Just look for the phrase "discharge of firearms", and be amazed at all the things up to and including rubber bands that can be considered a firearm by your local government!
