When I was in the Army, therre were a number of rules of thumb at all ranges to hit your target. Among them were:
    Sight alignment
    Sight picture
    breath control
    squeeze the trigger

and these may not be exactly right.

Can anyone point me to these 8 or 10 rules?

If my poor memory serves, the Marine Corps acronym is BRASS.

    Breathe
    Relax
    Align the
    Sights,
    Squeeze the trigger.

The other concept that helps me is NPOA. Natural Point of Aim. Get in shooting position, align the rifle, then close your eyes for a minute. If the sights have wandered off, change your position until the rifle will stay where you want it. It'll be much easier to keep the sights aligned when NPOA is tuned in.
