Ok. I understand people are panicking and buying everything in sight, but Hoppes 9!?! Really?

I went to the range last week, and on the way home remembered I needed more. It took stops at a gunshop, an outdoor store, and two Walmarts to find some. Finally found it at the second Walmart. They had two bottles left. I was very tempted to buy both, but, I left one for someone else.;)

Well, in a pinch you could mix up a batch of Ed`s Red bore cleaner. You should be able to locate all the ingredients quite readily. I`d recommend you look it up but if I recall correctly its equal parts denatured alcohol, paint thinner, automatic transmission fluid and acetone. Just don`t spill any of it on wood stocks -it`ll eat the finish off.

Buy a quart but decant it into a little bottle so that over the decades it doesn't become a copper solution from the brass brush dipping.

It might sound obvious, but check your local hardware store.

A year or so back, I went looking all over the internet for Outer's bore-cleaning solvent. Finally found a suppy via Amazon.

Then, a couple of days after it arrived, I stumbled across two bottles at the local hardware store in a tiny section devoted to gun stuff. Of course, I live in a small town in the midwest, where having gun-related stuff is not as faint-inducingly outrageous as it might be in a city.

In a pinch? Since I discovered Ed's Red, I no longer use Hoppes #9. It works great.

Besides, Hoppes #9 is not what I remember it to be in the past.

The formula for Ed's Red I use is equal parts kerosene, mineral spirits, Dexron automatic transmission fluid and acetone.

Yes, it can strip the finish off the stock.

All components available at hardware or auto parts stores and without the "gun" moniker not subject to the current panic buying.

More information here..

I never use Hoppes 9 anymore. Doesn't clean as well as G96 or Breakfree. Wouldn't mind trying some Ed's Red though.

I made up a batch of ER and like it (used lanolin). As far as commercial stuff, I've used Blue Wonder. It's a gel and really seems to clean like nothing else.

I dont get all these threads. Its been well reported that there is a run on all guns, ammo and everything to do with guns. I would assume this to mean everything for shooting, primers, powder, bullets, raw lead to mold bullets, molds, 22lr ammo, cleaning kits, patches, solvents, brushes, gun safes, gun pouches, gun cases both plastic and metal, bullet boxes, reloading equipment, scales, powder measures, dies, presses, bolts to mount presses, wrenches to tighten bolts on presses, gloves to hold wrenches to tighten bolts on presses, and so on and so forth. everything to do with our hobby is in short supply.

Look there's no mystery here, many of you are failing to connect the dots, much of the buying raging through the market, is predicated upon the belief that the nation is about to fall! If that happens, little things like "Hoppes #9" become large things, just like TP, and baking soda!

People are responding to the threat of the marxists, we can deny this till the cows come in, but the fact is that everyone knows whats coming and they are preparing as best they are able.

Either I'm way ahead of the curve or I just got lucky. Or, maybe I just don't shoot as much as years ago.

There was a little "mom & pop" store where the owner was retiring, partly because he was fed up with BATFE. He had a good supply of quarts and I bought 4 of them. I still have 2 quarts as I use #9 for initial cleaning, followed by Break Free or a copper solvent. I just like the smell of the #9 too!
:D

I hear 'ya. I couldn't find any sort of CLP or Hoppe's around me. I gave up and bought online.

Exactly.

At my local club in "normal times" we sign up and vote in between half a dozen to three dozen new members a month.

Last month's meeting we voted in 143 households, a mix of both family and single adult members. I can remember not too long ago when we didn't sign up 143 new memberships in an entire year. Last night's meeting was a repeat of last month's.

Everything gun related is a little crazy right now. Seeing cleaning solvent stock out is nothing surprising. In fact with all the new gun owners it's expected.
