I have a Remington ADL Varmint in 308 with a 26" barrel. I am considering cutting this down to make the rifle more ground/elevated blind friendly. Farthest shot I would take is 300yds. Would shortening it to 20" take too much oomph away from it? Is 22" a better compromise? I will be handloading either 150 or 165gr Sierra Game Kings with RL-15 close to max charge.

I have a 22" 30-06.
I wouldn't want it any shorter for hunting, due to increased muzzle blast closer to my unprotected ears.

Shorten away. Even as short as 16" 308 has more than enough oomph to knock any bambi flat inside 300yds

As to blast I don't find a 20" 308 to be any worse than a 24" magnum such as 7mm or 300wm

I think I'll be following this post to see the general thoughts on this. I have a 700 Police with the 26 inch barrel. I have a suppressor waiting on paperwork. I am going to have the barrel cut down and threaded. I have been debating on the length myself. I am trying to decide myself on either 20 or 22 inch..

I have two 26" barreled 308's that I cut down to 20 inches. Of course all barrels are individuals in their own right, I lost less than 100fps on both doing so. The 308 is fairly efficient and doesnt lose much in the shorter barrel. The rifles are much easier to handle being 4 inches shorter.

I have a Savage 308 with a 22" barrel, and I wouldn't want it any longer. It maneuvers very nicely in both my treestand and on the ground and I don't notice any unneeded muzzle blast.

I would cut it to 16" or 18" to make it more handy.

I love short barreled bolt guns

I personally would not want anything shorter than 22" as I'm an advocate of longer barrels offering up free velocity.
I've not heard anyone mention a compromise of 21".
