I went with the g/f out to her parents house in Minnesota this weekend and her Dad took us to a private range. I got to shoot my SKS, M44 and Mossberg 835 for the first time since I bought them.

SKS- I love this gun!! Very little recoil and pretty accurate. I was shooting Silver Bear ammo. I was a little worried that I maybe didn't clean the cosmoline out of it well enough but there were no slam fires and no cosmoline leaking from it. This gun us a total joy to shooting. I'm thinking about picking up a second and throwing a scope on it!

M44- Wow! You guys weren't kidding when you said this thing kicked. And the flame out the end of the barrel is insane!!! I'm having some trouble with accuracy though. Even at 50 yards I was having trouble constantly hitting the target. I'm not sure it's it's the gun or the ammo. The ammo, by the way, was Hungarian Lightball from 1978.

Mossberg 835- I know this isn't the shotgun forum, but I thought I'd post about it anyway. I don't think I could have picked a better first shotgun. I find it to be very comfortable and a lot of fun to shoot. Once I got into the swing of it, I was able to knock down clay pigeons very consistently. I even bought some 3 1/2" shells just to see what they are like. Big mistake... I fired three of them and they did a number on my shoulder. I can't believe how much those things kicked! :what:

All in all, it was a fun couple of days. :D

Was your bayonet extended on the M44? They zeroed those guns in with the bayonets extended.

Thanks for the info (warning) on the M44. I just got one recently and haven't fired it. I have a Mossberg 500. I am going to put a Knoxx stock on it as I am getting older and the shoulder just can't take the pain anymore.
PR thanks for that bit of info on the bayonet.

Sounds like I missed out on some fun. I couldn't agree more with what you're saying. I love my SKS too, totally underated in the fun department.

My M44 is decently accurate, you might want to try some different ammo.

I don't have have an 835 but I do have a 500 and made the mistake of shooting some 3.5 inch slugs through it. Went something like this. Boom! Ouch! Weeeee! Boom! Ouch! Weeee!, repeat.

Finding the favorite ammo for YOUR Mosin-Nagant is almost as much as a "try it out to see what works" as finding the favorite ammo for your .22LR pistol.

One added benny to this is that you get to shoot A LOT to find the best combo.

MY M-44 seems to like the Czech Silvertip and oddly enough, the really crappy Albanian 1988-1989 vintage ammo the best.

Oh yeah, a $15 slip-on recoil pad will help tame the kick of that M-44. Amazing how much different the 'kick' feels with a pad instead of that steel butt-plate pounding your shoulder. Although, that is how I suspect the Soviet Army cooks tenderized meat...a slab between the stock and shoulder.....BANG! next slab, repeat....

Heehee

I bought a m44 last week. My 11 y/o and I put about 70 rounds each through it. It grouped ok, but grouped really high. I'm wondering if I should file down the front post until it's zeroed at 100. Thoughts?

And... lol, both our shoulders are purple and green.

That kid does NOT fear recoil. Damn rifle's bigger'n he is.

ETA... Please disregard my request for thoughts on filing the front post. That'd just make it worse!!

So... how the hell *do* I lower the strike of the round? I can't *add* material to the front post.

If you can find a piece of plastic tubing that will fit snugly over the post it should get the job done, but a snug fit is required if you want your zero to not wander all over creation.

Hey! that's a good idea. I could even file the tubing (or some other material to fit over the post) to a nice point. Thanks!
