I would like to find a shotgun that can be stored in a compartment that is 38” long. Mossberg says the 500 with an 18.8” barrel is too long by 1.5”. I suppose it would fit diagonally but that might be awkward. Assuming I don’t want something like a Shockwave do I have an option other than buying a folding or collapsible stock? I considered a Stevens 320 but it’s supposedly the same length.

I suppose I could trim the factory stock or remove the recoil pad but that would probably be annoying.

We can agree the 18inch barrel requirement is rediculous to stay the least. Unless you have a shorter stock I don’t think it would work. You can order 12 inch lop short stocks. That may work.

I have a RemArms M870 12 ga with the factory 18" barrel that I put a 12 1/2" youth stock on it as suggested above with a 1" thick Pachmyer recoil pad. I'm measuring right at 37 7/8" OAL. So this would work. If you don't want it that close you could just use a thinner pad.

I also have a 20ga youth M870 setup for home defense with the youth 12 1/2" factory stock and 21" barrel. I didn't measure it but sitting next to the 12ga 870 mentioned above... the 20ga youth is longer. So it won't make the 38" max criteria without cutting that barrel and loosing the choke tube threads.

There are many options if youre willing to take it down.
Many sxs and o/u come apart very easily.
Winchester mod 12 and 97 take down both barrel and mag tube for a compact size.
Those folding single shots would fit, but they're wide when folded.

A nice sxs snaps together quicker than you can say it.

Sometimes I amaze myself at not seeing the obvious. Any normal shotgun will fit if I take the barrel off. A few extra seconds to assemble it wouldn't matter, since I wasn't planning on storing it loaded anyway.

As far as the coach gun thing goes , Stoeger has the almost same size SxS called compact. About an inch shorter stock and about an inch longer barrel. Or so.
But it has screw in chokes. I have one by my bed. Shot a turkey during covid. Sold a coach gun to get it. All in 20g
