joe,

Actually the choice of shotgun and ammo matters much less than the shooter. In other words, most any shotgun and load (with good tactics) will do for home defense- if YOU will do. Much depends upon the individual situation, of course, and few generalities can be applied that cover every set of circumstances. Consideration for misses and overpenetration have to come into account no matter what firearm is used; other family members in the home, nearby neighbors etc. should not be endangered by your defensive efforts. Planning, preparation, training and practice are critical.

Here at Casa Lapin we use 12 gauge Remington 870 Express guns (yes, several of them, we have more than one fire extinguisher too), bought used and cheap, 18- 20" barrels with sights, ImpCyl or Mod chokes, 12 1/2" LOP stocks (my wife is 5'4" and has to be able to use them too) and full length field style forearms (same reason as the short stocks). They have Sidesaddles, the 4-shot kind since they have long forearms, and rails to attach a light (Streamlight M3 or Ombu Z-5). They have 3 rounds of Hornady TAP FPD (red hull) 8-pellet 00 buck in the magazines and 4 Brenneke KO slugs in the Sidesaddles, no magazine extensions because my wife hates a muzzleheavy gun.

HTH, there's lots more on the subject on the forum if you care to read it,
