Just got excited about loading above average slug loads in an NEF heavy rifled shot gun.(3 in)

I have a lathe, and want to turn my own solid slugs from copper or brass.
Is .725 diameter with grooves a good place to start?
I'm on my way to the library to learn how to reload for these very high loadings.
Any info would be much appreciated on this and on gear to buy.
