It sounds like the assailant used birdshot, which is a whole different story. I highly doubt the victim would be ok, or still have pellets of 00 buckshot stuck in their face.

A well aimed shot is far more important than a big caliber... go with what you are comfortable with! That's gotta be a bad a** scar though... pellets still in his face and all...

So whatever he caught in the face was just a few stray perimeter pellets. Full-on at close range, he could have been killed and was lucky the punk's aim was off.
Lessons from this incident are compelling: A .22 can be enough. Fast to bring into play and notoriously accurate, the small caliber pistol might get off the first shots and put them on target. Most of us are obsessed with firepower and want the biggest rounds we can handle, but we're also coming from the mindset of defenders, and the attacker will generally prefer an unarmed, helpless target. Once you are shooting back, you have some serious initiative.
This was also demonstrated by the post here earlier from the guy who drove off some gangbangers with a .22. The enemy doesn't care what caliber you're shooting, the fact that you're shooting is probably going to be enough to send them running - no guarantee of that but it has been reported this way in Armed Citizen columns, here, and elsewhere so frequently that it's an established fact.
Also a plus here is that, assuming the one guy in critical condition pulls through, our hero won't have to deal with a homicide investigation. I prefer .357 but this story demonstrates Jeff Cooper's principles in so many ways - firepower is trumped by speed, coolness, determination and accuracy.

Frankly, I don't believe it! Everyone knows a .22 will just make them mad.
Seriously, I hope this brings the little .22 a bit of respect. Everytime I hear somebody saying how it's no better than a sharp stick, or they'd rather have thier pocket knife, I think it's a tragic accident looking for a place to happen. Wake up, it s a gun, and all guns are dangerous and worthy of respect.

You know while it's true shot placement rules I was on a jury pool a couple of years ago where the police came into a known crack house to make arrests of the dealers.
One of the cops was coming down a narrow 3.5 foot wide hallway when one of the dudes steps out with a pistol to engage the officer.
They BOTH missed each other!!

True. Like all firearms, a .22 rifle or pistol should be handled with respect and care. That doesn't mean there aren't far better choices for HD. Just because it has worked in some cases doesn't make it the best or even a good choice. I'd still take the shotgun every time...and I'd load it with shot designed for people, not birds.
