I believe in keeping things practical and simple...but not too simple. A bead works great when you're out shooting skeet in the day but night sights are best for hd. A quality light to identify your target and some 00 buck that you have patterned should do ya good. Simple. Now the not too simple...I decided to add a few items to my Hatsan Aimguard after some research. With three kids and a wife at home I wanted to be able to have a free hand if need be so I added a pistol grip and a Magpul fixed carbine stock.

New forend with an AFG allows me to grip it just like my AR and I don't bend my wrist as much.

The original front sight was a plain post similar to the one in the picture but without the fiber optic insert so I filed it down, added a bead, and an xs big dot. Refinished the barrel with high temp Rustoleum and baked it as per the instructions.

With a plus one tube extension I can carry the factory 5 rounds without bottoming out the spring and still add one in the chamber and one in the tube when it's time to go to work.

Hope this helps those who are looking for some ideas.

My HD shotgun is pretty simple and basic. A Maverick 88 with a Limbsaver Slip-On recoil pad and a buttstock elastic shot shell holder loaded with 00 Buck.

I also have a stock Winchester Model 1300 in 20 gauge with an 18" plain barrel or 22" vent rib barrel that I sometimes rotate into the HD line-up.

The only HD shotgun I have is a Win. Defender, 12 ga, 8 shot. I've added nothing to it. I'm sure it needs a mounted light. I also need to shoot it some...well, a bit more than I do.

I have three shotguns for HD.
My main is a Remington 1100 standard weight 20 gauge with a 21" barrel and 2 shot extension. (have a skeet barrel for it also)

The second is a Remington 870 Standard weight in 20 gauge with 2 shot extension and pistol grip collapsible AR style stock from Magpol (s) , It has a smoothbore 20" slug barrel on it.

The third is a Mossberg 500 in 20 gauge with a 19" barrel all else stock. I did set it up with screw in choke tubes but it generally carries a modified choke in it.

I use 2&3/4 inch #3 or #1 buckshot, but also have some 3 inch #4 buckshot. Soon I will be downsizing to probably just the Mossberg.

Mine is a Maverick 12 ga. of which I've never heard/read a discouraging word. Its at the top of this group pic of my shotguns. The Model 12s were inherited. I like single 0 Buck. w/12 .32 OD pellets compared to 9 pellets .33 OD for the 00.

Keep it simple. Play with the stock some so it points and shoulders easy. A bright white light to see with. And halfway decent sights you like.

As basic as it gets. I have an 870 Tactical Mag, but this is what protects my house:

An old Ithaca 37. Sits at the end of my bed, like an old friend.

Before I moved to the country and transitioned to an AR for HD I kept my Benelli M1S90 set up like this in a V-Line vault under my bed:

Insight M3X light, Tritium GRs, loaded with 7+1 #1 Buck, OO HORN TAP on the stock

Still have the gun, but now it mostly serves as a muskrat/beaver control gun, owning a 9 acre pond does have it's drawbacks.

Ok I'll play.
Benelli supernova; +2 extension, Mesa Sureshell rail/shellcarrier Generic light mount, Surefire 6PX flashlight. yeah that's a truglow dot but it works real good and has held up to a couple hundred 12 ga rounds so far,

My go to HD gun is a G19 - the easiest weapon for me to maneuver through the house alone, but I keep ARs and shotguns handy for going outside into the open, night or day, to deal with the random wild animals that are after my chickens and goats.

Here are my two handiest scatterguns:

870 tactical, modified choke, with Mesa stock and shell carrier, Streamlight, 9 rounds of 00 and 3 slugs in and on the gun.

NEF Pardner 12. Cut to 18.5. Fiber optic sight. Limbsaver. Shell carrier with 3 buck, 2 slugs. I still need to shorten the LOP.
