jerkyman, not saying the instructors who qualify are qualified, they just meet the minimum requirements. The people I know who wanted to do it did not meet the minimums set by the scouts, which I was told were somewhat asinine, and therefore couldn't do the job, despite being adaquate for the job. Are you confused yet? I am.

The development of it being a park ranger is relieving, as I would hate to see a scout master taken over the coals for defending people in his care.

Well, Well, Well. Looks like there is a little more to the story...

(Saluda County) - Two weeks after a reported shooting involving trespassers at Camp Barstow, the man once considered a victim has turned himself into police on charges that he made the whole thing up.

"None of his stories added up, I mean, none of his stories added up," says Saluda County Sheriff Jason Booth. "He's still claiming his innocence, but there's too much evidence pointing in the other direction."

Sheriff Booth says the camp's caretaker, 34-year-old Lucius Gray, told investigators that trespassers on camp property fired shots at him - a statement that prompted a large scale manhunt in Jacquelyn Middleton's neighborhood.

"We were told that there were people in the subdivision with a weapon and we didn't know what was going on," she recalls.

Sheriff Booth says the part that's even worse is that Gray actually fired six shots, not up in the air, but into the woods. Investigators at the scene found one bullet lodged into a tree.

"Now, what if some boy scouts would have been scouting out in the woods, doing what little boys do best?" Booth asks. "What if he had hit one of these kids?"

Adds Jacquelyn, "It makes me wonder, what were his motives in doing it?"

Camp Barstow has since fired Gray.

He's out of jail on bond.

I was there last night for the parents visit and asked about the situation and got some interesting replys from the scout master. They were suspecious about the whole incident.

What a lying doofus.

Oh well, here's my armed scout master story anyway. :)

My church does a lot of scouting related activities. I was drafted to be "adult supervision". (okay, for the Mormons here, I was in the YM presidency). Scout camp that year was up in the Uintahs.

The Uintahs has had bear problems. So I thought I would be smart about it, even though, as pointed out, the boy scout leaders aren't supposed to be armed. So I kept my handgun concealed under my shirt. Kept a FAL in my sleeping bag. I was spotted stuffing the FAL into the bag by another one of the adults. (adults had our own cabin).

"What you got there?" He asks.
"I don't like bears." I answer.
"Me neither." holds up shirt, has Glock 20.

Supposedly, the year before a bear wandered into the camp. Scouts and leaders went into the cabins. A fish cop came out to dispatch the bear. Leaders came out to watch (none of them officially armed). Fish cop shoots bear. Bear falls over. Fish cop approaches bear. Bear rises back up. Bear is shot repeatedly by the "unarmed' adult supervision. :p

Now I wasn't there for that, so I don't know if the truth has been embellished or not.

As for fixed bladed knives, I took a 21" Chitilangi Kuhkri. Wore it the whole time. Even chopped down a small dead tree with it. (nothing makes teenagers think you're cooler than hitting stuff with a big knife).

"Before everyone starts bashing the scouts as "anti gun", this EXACT camp in question here has not only a rifle merit badge course set up using .22's, but also has a shotgun skeet course using 20 ga. shotguns."

I was introduced to both .22s and shotgun at scout camp. Never could bring myself to endure archery though. We didn't shoot 20 gauges though, over/under 12 gauges! It was a lot of fun.

This is a realy nice BS camp.It is only a few miles from my home.In fact I have a hunting lease next too it.Glad this incident was made up.Crime rates here in Saluda County are very low.Camp Barstow has great shooting facilities and great fishing too.
