Should I get Rock River Varmint or Predator Pursuit?

I am thinking about getting my first AR-15. And have it narrowed down to the Rock River Arms Varmint 20" , and Predator Pursuit 20". I am not sure which one to get. The rifle will be used for target shooting, coyote hunting, and possibly some varmints out to extended ranges (proly no more then 400 yards). Which rifle do you think will be better for me? I am not sure on this but I think the Predator Pursuit has a slimmer barrel then the varmint, am I right on that?


Any other heavy barreled AR-15's suggestions will be appreciated too.

Just slap on your complete lower of choice and your pick of bolt carrier group.

Sure it's not a heavy barrel, but I've never seen better accuracy, with AR's, with those. Assuming you use a good barrel and a freefloat handgard, I don't believe in HB Ar15s.

My Predator Pursuit rifle with a Leupold 3x9 on a Larue mount is pushing 11.5 lbs. so take that into consideration. It is a good shooter!

I have the first Varmint they built several years ago. It has a 24 inch heavy and an aluminum no name free float handguard. It burns through at least 1500 rds a year in the foothills of the Big Horns. It will still put 10 rds into 3/4 inch at 200 yds in fairly rapid fire. I have taken 1000's of prarie dogs with it. The farthest was 625 yds. Using a leica laser rangfinder and a zeiss 6.5-20X with a mildot. It weighs 16 lbs witha lead ingot in the butt stock. I'm sure the predator will shoot very nearly as well if you want a lighter gun. I sling mine while I climb to my spots and then shoot sitting or prone with a pad. Its all dependent on how heavy you want the gun. I've got two complete RRA's and an extra lower that I may put a predator top end on. Sold every one of my other ARs and wouldn't look back if you paid me. Another very good option would be a shorter varmint but your giving up velocity. Your choice. Just get one, you'll love it.

I have 4 rra rifles and I concur with tactlt. They are great rifles. I recently got a dpms just to try it and it was much sloppy compared to the rra rifles, the trigger also was horrible...it was less money though for 200 less I would rather change it to a rra.

I'm happy using my RRA National Match A4 for varmints with a 3X9 scope. It comes with the 20" long, air-gauged, s/s barrel with a 1:8 twist; the two-stage Match trigger and is guaranteed for 3/4" MOA @ 100 yards. When I'm not hunting with it, I remove the scope, re-mount the carry handle/peep sight and use it to compete in the service rifle matches. A true dual-purpose rifle that gives up nothing in either venue.

The Predator Pursuit is plenty accurate, both rifles are rated at 3/4"@100yrds, on RRA site. Mines wears a Bushnell Elite 3200 5-15X40 Tactical, and is my favorite shooter

I would get the Predator Pursuit every time. The heavier barrel on the Varmint is all well and good when a bunch of shots are being fired in a row but for cold bore shots the accuracy is going to be the same.

The lighter weight of the Predator is what intrigues me. The Varmint is a heavy cuss comparatively speaking.

Love my Rock River National Match A2...dead accurate, I only use iron sights.

I have had a RRA 20" Varminter for several years and carry it in the field often. It is a heavy weapon with a loaded mag in it,but my Tactical 300WM weighs about 4-5lbs more and I tote it in the field just as often. It all depends on which rifle you like the most.I'm sure they will both shoot very well.
