Should you be legally allowed to carry concealed (if you have a ccw) into a place that gets the majority of its income from alcohol if you don't drink yourself but are just there to socialize with people that are?

For instance if you tag along with a group of friends to a restaurant (legal) but they decide to go to a bar afterward and have a couple drinks. I feel as if you should legally be allowed to carry if you don't drink. Just because others make bad decisions while drunk doesn't mean that it should affect a sober you from being allowed to defend yourself.

Mostly not because of something that might happen inside the bar, but to be able to defend yourself while, for instance, walking back to your car afterward.

You do know that there was a 14-page, 330+ post thread on this subject that did eventually get locked despite some of our best efforts to keep it on "The High Road"?

Some will say you can't trust yourself.

Some will say you can.

Some will say you can't trust OTHERS.

Some will say, "EXACTLY!"

Some will say don't drink and don't go to bars, period.

Some will say, "concealed is concealed."

Some will say, "the jury will throw the book at you if you ever have to use the gun because you were in a bar."

Some will say, "but I'll be alive to stand trial."

And so on, and so forth.

Me, I'll just say, in my state you can carry in a bar, and you can drink while carrying. And this doesn't seem to cause ANY problems. So what's with all the angst about it?

But, really, I don't predict a long life for this thread. For whatever reason, this really bothers some folks.

Edit to say: And your poll is flawed. I can't see either answer as being "right."

I can't say that I agree with either statement/choice in the poll.

  • ...alcohol makes drunk people irresponsible... I disagree. Alcohol might make people drunk, and surely, it'll make drunk people drunker, but it doesn't make them irresponsible. A person's irresponsible behavior makes them irresponsible.
  • ...bars are safer with no guns... I fundamentally disagree.

I live in a state that does not restrict alcohol and carrying. You can't carry drunk - I think the max is .05. Many people don't drink so why should they be restricted from carrying?

No doubt it should be legal. I don't drink at all and have been considering a bartender job lately, if nothing else can fall through soon. Even though I'd always be 100% sober in there, the current laws in my state would keep me from carrying. I believe breathalyzers are there for a reason and they should use them rather than restrict my right to carry.

I think th eanswers given render the poll worthless they're too slanted.

Where I'm at I CAN carry in a bar if I choose as long as I don't drink

I voted yes and I'm in favor of the bill in Ohio to change the law so I can take my gun into my favorite Mexican restaurant when I eat there. And I don't drink.

Last I checked, drunk driving is a crime but they don't arrest folks for having car keys in a bar. They arrest them if they get drunk and use those keys. Why should carry be any different. Punish the crime not the people.

Ditto (we do have a .08 BAL limit, same as for driving, but it's perfectly legal to drink while carrying). Zero problems.

HGUNHNTR - " Can someone clarify, what does the "not sober me" mean?"

I was kinda wondering about that, too.

As for CCW in a bar, it is allowed in Idaho. I can't recall but one incident in years, where some dude who was CCWing in a bar, got into a gunfight outside the bar. Alcohol was involved.

Getting drunk, driving, and carrying a concealed weapon is something that can get an Idaho resident thrown in the slam... if caught.

Colorado too. Unless I'm wrong, but from what research I've done, it is allowed. IMO, there's nothing wrong with legally doing something responsible while responsibly doing something else legally.

And we are done by post #3 IMO I would make a slight change

A person's irresponsible actions makes them irresponsible.

I clarify only because some people confuse actions with behaivor, i.e. drinking in and of itself is irresponsible whether or not you are sitting at home alone in a padded room or out on the town with friends. Emotion rules some people, especially with that evil drink.

Principle: It doesn't matter what causes a person to be irresponsible, it is only irresponsible acts that infringe on my rights that are truly crimes.

Get drunk, carry a gun, drive home, I don't care. The minute you act in an irresponsible fashion and violate another's rights, it is over. Jail. Long stay. No exception. My answer, keep it concealed and between the lines and I'm happy.

I'll drink to that! :)

Can't think of a reason why not.

If I went to a bar to night I'd carry my weapon with me, but fortunately I quit drinking so I also quit bar hopping.

Your poll is badly worded.

I, for one, do what the law says, period, because doing what the law should say, or should be, isn't going to get you anywhere in a court of law. Don't like it, get the law changed.

Are you familiar with the terms "leading question" and "push polling?"

I agree that we should be permitted to carry anywhere we choose, but your poll options are about as biased as anything I've seen on CNN.

My list of places you should be allowed to carry:
Bar (non intoxicated)
Car
Airplane
All States
Wal-Mart
Whataburger
Work
College Campus
High Schools (for teachers)
Airports
Government Buildings
Sporting Events
Gun Shops
MILITARY BASES!!!
Lubys
Mcdonalds

Alright, sorry for making a hasty poll.

When I meant "not sober me", I guess I worded it weird but it sounded good verbally just not in text. I meant it to say, "alcohol affects people that drink it, not me"

I don't think I can change the poll questions, but let's redo them.

1)Yes
2)No

All the stuff after the yes and no were vague opinions of what one might think when they vote for that answer, since I'm sure everyone that voted Yes would agree that alcohol only affects those that drink it, and if you're sober and carrying, others drinking won't affect your behavior in a bad way that would make you carrying a danger.

And those that answered No probably believe that bars are safer with no guns at all, and what was included in the () was just my little personal rebuttal argument to those that voted No.

How many times in one month are we gonna beat this horse? I'm getting a little tired of popcorn.
