Boston, MA - At a press conference today John Rosenthal, Chair and Co-founder of Stop Handgun Violence, along with State Senator Jarrett Barrios, State Representative David Linsky, Boston Police Superintendent Paul Joyce and Director of Federal Legislation for the Brady Campaign, Tony Orza unveiled America's largest billboard, depicting a 150' X 30' AK-47 assault rifle and stating that this gun will be "Coming to a Home Near You" unless action is taken to renew the State and Federal Assault Weapon Bans.

On September 13, 2004, the federal ban on assault weapons such as the one shown on the billboard is set to expire. At this point, even though most Americans support the Assault Weapons Ban, Congress has made no effort to vote to extend it. And, although President Bush promised in his 2000 election campaign that he would extend the ban, he has also made no effort to do so.

Massachusetts has its own ban on assault weapons which will also sunset with the federal ban unless it is extended separately. The Massachusetts Senate voted last week to extend the ban and the legislation is currently being debated in the House.

"We are calling on President Bush to keep his campaign promise to extend the Federal Assault Weapons Ban which will expire in September 13, 2004. Assault weapons are truly weapons of mass destruction whose only purpose is to kill as many people as possible without having to stop and reload. Twenty percent of police officers killed in the line of duty are killed with these weapons which are designed to penetrate police body armor from more than 1000 yards. That's why every major police organization in the nation supports extending the ban," stated John Rosenthal.

This is the eighth billboard developed by Stop Handgun Violence since it's inception in 1995. SHV was the lead advocate in the passage of Chapter 180, the most comprehensive gun law in the nation. John Rosenthal stated, "Since 1998, we've experienced an 87% reduction in accidental firearm injuries and deaths among 0-19 year olds. Massachusetts now has the toughest gun laws, and the lowest firearm fatality rate per 100,000 population in the nation".

The billboard design was created by Boston based Modernista! Ltd.

Nice postban rifle

Awwww....man. If the ban isn't renewed, I get an AK? Is this like 'a chicken in every pot' type promise?

Sweet.

Mike

Strange, looks almost too big to be a handgun. Could 'Stop Handgun Violence' have some other agenda? :scrutiny:

It would have been really funny if they, in their general gun ignorance, had put a postban rifle up on that billboard.

Looks like the green monster in the background. That would put it on Landsdowne St; fronting I90 in Boston, for those who might want to pay a visit after the next Red Sox game?

angrywalkindude:
" Maybe a gun shop will rent the sign next and change the wording. Talk about a slap in the face!"

Mass. has been slapping us in the face for a long time.

They are already at a home near me, MINE!. :D

I highly doubt the AWB will be renewed, don't we already have a state law in MA about that??

In any case, even anti-gun folks realize now that the AWB is BS... my dad, for example, thinks handguns should be banned outright but also thinks that the AWB is a waste of time and money.

Ok, kids! It's time for everybody's favorite game: Count the Blatant Lies!

I count at least seven. Anyone else care to play?

I called 1-877-SAFE-ARMS. I got an answering machine. I think I'll call and leave a message every day.

Knives are weapons of mass destruction whose only purpose is to effectively cut off limbs from living humans while using barely enough force so that it can be applied to a large mass of people. Knives are one of the most common weapons used to kill and harm humans. The signs are all in front of us - we need to get the knives out of the kitchens of America.

How the hell can a weapon have a "purpose"? Does it think? Will it refuse to do anything else than killing innocents? Also, they might want to check up on the term "WMD". Don't inflate it. WMD is nuclear weaponry, Ebola and mustard gas, not a gun with a 30 round 5.56mm magazine.

it's currently legal to own and use 100 magazines
like the BetaC mag

currently they have to be of pre 1994 manufacture

come sept 14th, you can buy a new one

If these 'assault rifles' can penetrate body armor at 1000 yards, not have to stop to reload, and has a hundred round firing capacity, why doesn't the military have 'em? :neener:

Heck, only thing I can think of that fits the bill in a M2 Heavy Machine Gun. Those only weigh about 84 lbs and cost tens of thousands of dollars. Oh yea, and the ammo is over $1 a round even if you buy in bulk.

Big lie tactics only works when you control the airwaves. Spread the truth. "If they are willing to lie about numbers just to scare you, what else are they willing to lie to you about?" Remember, lies are the resort of an enemy that is too weak to effectively deal with a situation. Tell the truth always, and eventually people will see the light. Take the high road.

As bad as it seems at time, RKBA is making progress. I can't wait till the AWB sunsets and there's no wave of drive-by bayonettings. It will make the anti-RKBA folks look even more like the liars they really are.

Ahem

Graffiti and/or vandalism is not the High Road. You know...the High Road? That thing we're supposed to take? ;)

Mike (as tempting as it may be...)

When they are done with it, I might pitch them a couple of boxes of ammo in return for the giant AK....cut away from the rest of the propaganda of course!

Yes the banner is on the back side of a parking lot on Lansdowne Street. It's on the Mass Pike (Route 90) so it's very, very visible.

The building is owned by John Rosenthal, so you can't rent it out. It ALWAYS has an anti-gun banner there.

He's one of those "Well I'm a gun owner too" type of banners, I think he owns a Perazzi shotgun or two

Now THAT'S what I call a lie!

Twenty percent of police officers killed in the line of duty are killed with these weapons which are designed to penetrate police body armor from more than 1000 yards.
Sooo many lies... my favorite is the 1000 yard one. Anybody want to see how many shots it takes them from an AK to hit and penetrate some body armor at 1000 yards? I think the answer would be wonderfully absurd! :D
