What caliber? The pro hunters are a game bullet, I load the 125 gr flat nose in my .30-.30 and they expand very well. I have not shot a deer with them yet but they are the brutal on a coyote.

As much as I love Sierras those Ballistic Tips can really perform on deer too, some people think they tend to blow up but we have put them through deer at close range full bore 270 WSM speeds and never had a failure, some pretty nasty damage (which you expect at 3300fps) but never a bullet failure. At 2800-2900fps from an 06 either one should work just fine from point blank to 300yds shoot which ever the rifle likes best, beyond that the Nosler's better ballistics give it a commanding lead.

BTW I don't know what size deer you are talking about but the most devastating load we have ever used out of the 06 was a 165gr Game King at about 2850fps, never seen anything like it, just don't use on smallish deer there won't be much left if you cannot keep it in the neck/head.

180s will expend more of their energy out the far side, less shock more penetration due to both tougher bullets (180s usually are) and lower impact speeds, 180s will most certainly work though, they have been used for many years. Genraly 150-165s are considerd the ideal depending on the size of deer you are talking about, 180s really come into their own on larger game like elk.

In my experience the BT's are pretty tough bullets. Probably more so than needed for even the biggest whitetail. The last one I shot (165gr '06) was with a Win. 'Combined Technology', which I really think is just a BT w/the black Lubalox coating, had more fight in him than those I took with Hornady Interlocks or Sierra ProHunter's. Zipped through with less damage than I was expecting, and it was a good heart/lung shot. Unless the range is crazy long, I trust the Sierra's. Really though, with an '06, deer just don't take an exotic bullet. Confidence and accuracy would be my top priorities.

Yeah you can use almost any 30 cal bullet inside 300yds and put a deer down, I don't hunt deer with the 06 because it is overpowered for such a task, I normally hunt with my 6.5x55, kills them just as dead just as quick with alot less mess.
Hot Cores are fine, but being phased out by the Deep Curl, I just posed a range report for them using my 6.5, I hope to have one soon with the 06 and 180gr DC.

In .270 win and 7mm RM I like the Pro Hunters over the Ballistic Tip. The Ballistic tips seem to over expand and then frag really bad, thus reducing penetration. We've killed a lot of game with them though, just not my choice between those two.
