What is the little ring-thing that hangs down under the gas block?
SIG 550 Bi-pod mount?

It looks like an industrial-grade hooded front sight, but obviously is a fixed part that doesn't swivel 180 degrees to the top of the rifle.

What is it?

On the 556's predecessor, the Sig-550, you slide a bayonet lug in and secure it with a pin through the hole. I haven't heard of a specific bayonet for the 556. Maybe the 550 bayonet is compatible with the 556.

O.K.!

Hadn't thought of a bayonet lug mounting point looking like that.

Thanks for the info!

i havent had a sig 550 in a few years but if i remember correctly that is for a slingpoint.the bayo lug was ground off.

There is a peg that slides in there and is retained by a rollpin/split pin/tension pin or whatever you want to call it. The peg locks the bayonet in place.

There's a bunch of them for sale on ebay.
