The GAO has thrown out a protest from handgun manufacturer, Sig Sauer, Inc., which has supplied the .40 caliber handguns currently used by agents of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), after that agency eliminated Sig Sauer from the most recent procurement competition to supply new handguns to the ATF.

Three gun manufacturers, Sig Sauer, of Exeter, NH; Smith & Wesson Corp., of Springfield, MA; and Glock, Inc., of Smyrna, GA, competed for a contract to supply the ATF with a new “handgun system,” which would consist of two separate weapons of identical function and design, said the GAO, “a standard-size duty weapon for enforcement operations and a compact model for backup and auxiliary needs.”

During phase two of a three-phased evaluation process, the ATF asked 20 of its agents to put all three proposed handguns through identical “live-fire” tests.

“Based on the results of the shooting tests, the [source selection board] recommended to the contracting officer that Sig Sauer’s handgun be excluded from further consideration as unacceptable with respect to reliability,” said the GAO, in a decision document released on August 18. ATF agents had recorded 58 stoppages with Sig Sauer’s full-size and compact pistols, 13 of which were considered to be gun-induced and 45 shooter-induced.

Sig Sauer raised a variety of objections to the manner in which ATF considered various criteria during the evaluation process, but the GAO didn’t buy the company’s arguments.

“In sum, the record shows that ATF reasonably evaluated the firms’ proposals in accordance with the solicitation’s evaluation criteria and concluded Sig Sauer’s offer was not one of the ‘most suitable for performance to the Government’ to continue to phase III,” said the GAO, in a protest denial signed by Acting General Counsel Lynn Gibson.

The decision document did not make clear if the ATF has issued a procurement contract yet to either Smith & Wesson or Glock.

Sig Sauer is an ISO 9001 certified company with over 380 employees. It is the largest member of a worldwide business group of firearms manufacturers that includes J.P. Sauer & Sohn and Blaser, Gmbh. in Germany and Swiss Arms AG in Switzerland.

Would like to know more about which Sigs were used and what kind of stoppages took place. I've had Sigs for many years and the only problems I've ever had were due to worn out recoil springs (after much use).

Interesting.

I put close to 30,000 rounds in my 226 before I got rid of it (when I traveled quite a bit).

The only problem I had in the few years I had it were....... that I didn't have 30,000 more rounds to put in it!!!!

Wonder what models of Sigs were tested? P250 Perhaps? Hate to say it. But it does not surprise me. Sig is not what they used to be. More so with their 40 S&W than the 9mm.

Dunno about early models, but they reviewed new gear.

At least, I'd assume that Sig would send them the best!

Sorry, but Beretta is the largest (and oldest) gun manufacturer in the world (and also the longest continuously operating commercial enterprise in the world).

The article does not refer to Sig Sauer as the largest gun manufactuer in the world but rather the largest member of the business group it is a part of:

the M&P and Glock are both far superior to the P250....don't blame them for switching. I've owned two 250s and ,while being a decent gun and reliable, the trigger absolutely sucks and it feels really cheap especially the TD lever. the all metal SIG pistols are way overpriced so i wouldn't expect them to go that route.

can't believe SIG submitted the p250 for the trials. that's the worst design they've ever come out. wrought with issues (as evidenced here).

none of my locals sells p250's any longer as no one was buying them, even at the going rate of $450. guess you do get what you pay for....

Not quite. Kongo Gumi, a Japanese construction company, operated from 578-2006, more than 1400 years. The Beretta company was founded almost 1,000 years after Kongo Gumi.

Why didn't they go with the SIG Pro 2022? It seems like a better gun. If SIG could just get going with their R&D on the P250 and make it a SA/DA, then it would be an excellent gun.

I would like to see S&W win this one. I love Glocks, but we need a US based company to supply arms to US Government agencies (as long as they are proven and pass trials).

When I first read the article I was a little baffled. Then I read that they used the P250, not surprised.

They should have submitted the 2022, but probably saw this as a potentially valuable PR stunt for their failing p250. For what its worth I hope S&W wins, so Glock has some more competition. Competition between the makers breeds the best firearms for us the consumers.

LOL

They would submit the P250. They advertise it like it's the Hammer of Thor. "IT REVOLUTIONIZES THE HANDGUN MARKET!! CHANGE FROM A FULLSIZE .45 TO A SUBCOMPACT 9MM IN SECONDS!!! OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!"

I love my Sig (229) but the P250 is an embarassment. Shame on you, Sig-Sauer. So much hype for a mediocre pistol at best. You need so many damn components to change the size of the pistol, and from a financial standpoint you'd be better off using the G22/G27 combo. I also really like the M&P so I'm sure they'd do just as well with that.

Hahahahahahahahaha

I would love to see S&W win. Its time to support American companys.

Amen to that. It's about time a truly American gun maker became a big contender in the worldwide pistol market. We can make them just as good. Don't believe all that Teutonic hype! lol This is coming from a big Glock fan.

Why on earth did sig submit the P250? Talk about shooting themselves in the foot.

I'd like to see S&W win this. America: **** Yeah :D

I agree, the Americans can make just as good a pistol as the Europeans.

I would like to see all American military, LE, or other US agencies use American made firearms from American companies. The US has plenty of firearms makers to satisfy the need.

Do you see the Austrians and Germans letting S&W, Ruger, Colt, etc. compete for firearms issuing for their countries?

My view on the "buy America" thing has changed.

Maybe it's because my last job landed me in manufacturing but.......

Until the politicians stop punishing us for manufacturing in this country (insane taxes at the local, state and federal level) then I really don't care anymore.

Somehow, nobody wants to put the blame on them for running business out of the country.

Though.... I agree.... the S&W do make a great firearm. Just shot a friends new one a couple weeks ago - really nice quality!

The BATFE should be forced to use nothing but Lorcin, Jennings, Jiminez, and Raven firearms as punishment for being what they are. Those are made in America aren't they?
