Sig P229 Elite Decocking Hammer Question

Hi, I have not yet been able to put any 9mm ammo in my gun. STill waiting for a shipmetn in the mail. I notice when I rack the slide of my SIg the hammer will go back. However, when I try to decock the hammer using the decocking hammer it doesn't work. I am wondering, will the decocking hammer only decock the hammer if their is a bullet in the chamber? I thought it would work regardless if it was loaded or not. I want to make sure there is not a malfunction with my new gun. I am not able to read anything in SIg's manual about this. Gotta wait few days before my ammo arrives

The decock lever should work regardless of whether there is a round in the chamber or a magazine in place. With the hammer at full cock, if you fully depress the decock lever and the hammer does not drop, then the gun is malfunctioning.

Looks like I received a sig with a malfunctioning decocking lever. Oh just my luck :banghead:.. Hmm.. I wonder if I should try to return it or see what I can do to get it to work. I wonder if it is a hard adjustment. I got a real good deal on the Sig and hate to return it. However, if the decocking hammer doesn't work it is kinda useless.

I have discovered something.. When I remove the rose grips and decock it without any grip, the hammer decocks. It decocks kind awkwardly though. It seems like theere is some type of obstruction. I am not sure what to do about this. Is this some cheap $5 fix a gun smith or myself can do? I don't get whats going on. Maybe I need to send back to Sig and get a new decocker piece?

After messing with it.. It seems to decock now. I have to push the decocker all the way down to the mag release and it goes. Is this the normal way you decock a sig? Its weird how it refused to work the first few times. I tightened up my screws and it seems to go through the full cycle. It seems you have to give the decocker a good push. I thought it be easier than that, but I guess not. It is not bad now and seems to work.. hmm.

You do have to push it all the way down. In fact, you will feel a click when it engages the decocker. Most people not familiar with it will not press it down far enough the 1st try.

Just as a first step, and while you have the grips off, do a thorough clean....see if that improves things at all. you may have something just binding it up.

During my academy I had trouble with my Sig P-220 "binding up" (that's the best way I can explain it. Trigger became very hard to pull after heating up at all/ several rounds, definate resistance/grinding). The range officer gave me the opportunity to take 15min. to go and do a thorough clean and it helped a great deal.

+1 to what 4Freedom said. The decock will not engage until it's all the way down too....

Its working dandy now.. Don't undersatnd exactly, but after removing and rescrewing in the grips, it seems to work. Maybe it was a little stuck at first and needed a bit of a push to loosen up at the bottom of the cycle.

I will give a range report hopefully soon on how it performs. I am loving the 15 round Mec-Gar mags that I can fit in this small but very comfortable pistol.
