Sig sauer trade in? - What to ask?

There are a number of used sigs out there at various websites. Some Swiss, some German, etc... Currently looking at the P226 and P229 models.

What questions should I ask? What should I look for? What should I stay away from? As of right now all I know is to make sure the rails aren't shiny and they have strong lands & groves.

What is the most I should pay for German trade-ins? Swiss trade-ins? Some sites have 1 mag while others have 3. What's the most I should pay for magazines?

Rails and barrel are probably the main things to look at, and you may also want to check the trigger and make sure it isn't too gritty (nothing really wrong mechanically with a gritty trigger though). Overall finish (as well as night sights etc.) will affect the value of the gun too. Other than that, just make sure everything looks like it should on any other pistol.

As far as price, commercial models of the 226 and 229 are going for between $500 and $600. Police trade-ins and police import guns should be going for a bit less, maybe $400-500 or so, but it really depends on the condition. New mags will set you back around $20, so I would probably factor in about $15 per mag if it is used coming with the gun.

If you're buying a slightly used commercial gun, try and take it down and look at some of the insides. If it looks clean, the seller probably took decent care of the gun. If its dirty, there's a chance he didn't (I have no idea why people sell guns without cleaning them first, but it happens.)

Also, on a commercial gun, you may want to replace things like the recoil spring and roll pins (if you have an older German made Sig), but it is probably not mandatory. However, if you get a military/police surplus gun, I would definitely try to replace all the springs.

Also, if you're going for a 226/229 in 9mm, you may want to add the 228 into that list as well.

I'd buy a new Sig for 500-600 in a heartbeat.

I just bought a 229 (no rails) with less than 50 rounds for 500.


Now I want a new 226 in 40 or a 220.

Expect 30-40 bucks for factory Mag's.

Sorry, I meant $500-600 used in good condition. New you're looking for a new gun it'll be around $1k or so. I personally don't have that much to spend on a gun so I never really bother looking at new prices of Sigs, so I have no idea where to get the best deal on on of those.

$30-40 is about average for "Sig Factory" mags, but they are made by MecGar and just stamped with Sig's logo. If you look a bit further down on that page, you'll see a MecGar flush fit mag for $23. A tad bit more expensive than the last time I looked (where I got the $20 price) but its essentially the same mag. FWIW MecGar makes factory mags for a lot of different companies. If you don't care about the stamp on the side, its usually cheaper to just buy MecGar.

Used Sig

Okiegunner: Sarco is very, well.... generous, in their estimation of condition. The general rule of thumb that I've heard (and seen from pics) is to drop the grade one level from what they call it. That's not to say that they're bad guns, all reports I've seen say they're good after some tune-up cleaning and spring replacement. They just need some work when they come in.

They're not THAT great of a deal though, considering that on surplus guns that are as beat to hell as some of theirs are, you really need to swap out springs (and probably roll pins as they are folded slide sigs) and will probably want to replace the mags. If you get the "VGC/Exc" 226 for $450, all those extras alone would put you into the low $500s without even getting into shipping and transfer costs. It wouldn't be too hard to find a used commercial 226 for that which will likely have less internal wear and almost certainly have less finish wear.

Not trying to discourage you from buying one, just make sure you know what all your costs will be up front before you think you got a great deal.

FYI, Sarco's guns are at least in part Israeli surplus. And these being surplus guns, the 228s shouldn't have rails (unless they found a new source). They were also out of 228s last time I checked, though they may have gotten some in since then.

Thanks for the update. Mark from Summit Gun Broker contacted me. Said they had a few very nice 2340s left for $335. New P250s from $369.00.

I know you can't believe everything people tell you. Just wanted to let everyone know what I was told.
