I was at my local gun shop yesterday and decided to play with a couple of SIGS. I've never really been interested in them as they are, as a class, nearly as boring as Glocks in appearance. The first one I was able to handle and dry fire was a compact carry piece that was pretty nice looking and had an awful trigger. It was really bad. Double action pull was horrible and single action pull was very hard. It was smooth, but it was something which would really foul your aim. I was kind of shocked considering what a sterling reputation SIG has. I handled a few more and they were pretty normal feeling, higher than average pull but smooth. A high quality feel.

Then I got my hands on the X-5. Holy Crap, what a great trigger! I'd just dry fired a Dan Wesson 1911 and it was very nice. But this X-5 was something else. I might have to have one of these, and it would be worth selling or trading some of my collection toward it.

Anyone want to comment on theirs?

I have a "lower end" P226 X-5 Tactical that I'm very pleased with. The SA trigger was nice out of the box and it's more accurate than me. If you have the money to spend on the more expensive models in the line they're exceptional. You may also want to check out the new X-6's on the SIG website. Shown with SIG Jet Funnel, SIG extended magazine base and Nill grips. :)

The "Tactical" is the model that I got the chance to check out. It really has everything except the adjustable trigger. And the trigger on the model I dry fired didn't need adjusting :)

And the trigger on the model I dry fired didn't need adjusting

the "adjustable trigger" on the L1 (top of the X-5 line) has more to do with reach than weight.

the next one down is the Competition which has a non-adjustable trigger and doesn't come with the Nills grips as standard

the L1 was their "best" the Competition was built to a price point...like the Corvette ZR1 and the Z06

below that and you start into alloy frames and different triggers

This is a trivial reason to do a post, but the gun I dry fired was the competition , not the tactical. It was one sweet handling chunk of metal.

I've had two of the X-Five pistols. Both that I owned were Competition models in .40 S&W. The first was as it came from the factory and stayed that way. I sold it because for me it didn't shoot any better than my other SIG pistols.

I got the second pistol in a trade and it was nowhere close to stock. Frame lightening, trigger work, different sights, recut cocking serrations, a Bar Sto 9mm conversion barrel that had been fitted to the gun, top of the slide had been serrated, refinish in "Superblack", Nill grips, and all kinds of other things that I can't think of at the moment. I recently traded it and I haven't missed it one bit.

Both of my X-Fives have been accurate, reliable pistols but I can also say the same thing of any other SIG that I've owned. Out of every SIG I own or have owned absolutely nothing comes close to my nickel West German 226. The X-Five's are nice, but try to shoot one before you drop the coin on it. In that price range I much prefer my Les Baer.

i didn't realize that Flork's "Blackbird" had passed through so many hands already

The guy that has it now would be #4. The work that went into that gun and the accuracy that it has is absolutely amazing, but it just wasn't for me.

Well, i ordered one. Should be here in the next week. I'm going to sell a few of my lesser used pistols probably. But that's......ok..

Played with an X5 a while back, I was able to shoot a few rounds through it. Great pistol, very smooth and accurate.

Yes, it's very big. But I think that will only allow me to shoot better. I think it will make an excellent winter carry pistol. I actually have a few jackets which have pockets BIGGER than that pistol. I've carried my 1911 and Taurus 92 and it's not that much larger than those two. Really, for the model SIG it is, it's just got the longer barrel. It's such a comfortable pistol to hold and the trigger is sublime.

The_match gun IMO

...

A good friend of mine just bought one, the competition model, with adjustable trigger and let me fire 2 mags worth.

I've got to say, at 16ft, I have never aimed (one eye) such tight groupings so effortlessy. In fact, of the 20 shots, all within 1/2" except 2 fliers 1" left and one low, 4 went thru the same tiny hole and the rest just missed each other as the holes kinda just grew larger.

I have no doubts, with some guns, you do get what you pay for.. as advertised.

This is a gun that deliverers as designed for..

the model with the adjustable trigger is the L-1, that's what makes it different from the Competition model
...

Just got back from the range and you are right 9mm (I think), in that, his is the P226 X-Five SAO with adjustable trigger.

I like it even more after today..

Well, it's IN and i pick it up tomorrow morning from my FFL. I'll bring it home and grease it and take it out. I have not had this much anticipation in a while.

Well, I'll find excuses to carry it now. What an exquisite piece of machinery! I'm at least twice as good a shooter as I was before the X-5. It's probably the longer bore axis and the fact that someone probably sighted it in prior to shipping it out to the dealer. The pistol is very large and heavy. A guy a few stalls down came over to check it out. He had a really nice SIG 1911. It's so tiny! Seriously - it was beautiful. Anyway, he came by because I was shooting silver dollar sized pellet clays at 80 feet and just pulverizing them. If the gun were any larger I'd have to get bigger hands and my hands are fairly large for a 5'6" male. I can't believe how nice the pistol is.

I ran 200 cartridges through it and did have one failure to feed at around round 70. It was not "tap rack" drill fixable. I had to remove the magazine to get it out and it fell out with the magazine. Regardless, the next 130 went perfectly and i'm not too worried. I ran some Federal, Remington, and Blazer aluminum case thru it. I believe it choked on the Remmington but I wasn't really keeping track as I was too busy popping empty
water bottles and other trash others left on the range.

There was a perception upon my part that the slightly larger barrel in this pistol produced a more powerful impact on my iron target. None of the ammo seemed under powdered. Interestingly enough, I got slightly
better accuracy with the Blazer, but it was just a hair.

Regardless, this pistol shoots like a rifle. The only other pistols i have which approach this are my Glock 32 and the FN 5/7. I have a 17 cal HMR revolver which is really accurate too. But it's not even the same type of animal, so I really don't mean to compare it here.

I'm VERY pleased with this. I just wish I'd stolen the other guy's SIG 1911 now....
