Ok, I picked up a L1A1 on an Imbel reciever a while back and want to put a beter sight system on it. I am not a big fan of the vanilla sights on the FAL platform. I have considered the SUITs, Aimpoints, or even some new DSA irons, but I am not sure what the best bet is for the money. I only have $450 invested in the rifle, so getting optics that cost as much as the rifle is out of the question. Any ideas on an inexpensive route for setting up some new optics or irons? Anyone have something they are looking to sell?

His FAL is based on an Inch pattern, isn't that rail meant for metric guns? Or does that only come into play if we're dealing with internal workings and magazines?

Mine is more like the ugly stepchild of the franken-fal. Ibel L1A1(accepts metric mags), British lower, Australian wood furniture, so I am not sure what I can even do with the ugly beast. All I know is that the iron sights are not like the ones on my M1 & M1A. Here are some pics maybe that will help.

The DSA and Tapco weaver railed top cover will fit both inch and metric. I have one for my L1A1. I prefer the standard sights myself. I can take a pic if you need it.

    Scopes on FAL's

Get a decent scope with a guarantee!!! The slamming of the bolt carrier back and forth in this rifle can eat up cheap scopes-believe me when I say that I've found out the hard way. Mine now wears an EOTECH 552 on a rail top cover. Can't beat it for 100 yards and under. Don't try to make it a sniping rifle-unless you have already spent the big$ from the get-go on a really good barrel. It's a great battle rifle!!

I just recently completed that same project!

I picked up a used DSA mount, (per DSA last April they were backordered on the mount till late June).

Added a Mueller 3x9x40 illuminated reticle scope. All said and done I had just under $200 for mount and optics.

I took it to the range yesterday to get it sighted in and see what it would do. Shooting reasonable handloads from a bench I managed a 2" group while having a crappy day. Overall I am happy with the set up. I don't expect it to shoot sub MOA groups, (if I want that I break out the SIG bolt gun).

    Here is a quick picture.

If you do go with a DSA mount you will want to replace the screws, PM me as I have extra 8-32 x 1/4 hex screws in black.
