I just received my bnib Sightron scope and I thought I would post a brief review. Sightron is based out of Youngsville, NC about an hour from me and their rifle scopes are made in Japan. The quality of their rifle scopes in my experience is first rate. Their Big Sky line features upgrades from their SII line up to include a Climate Control exterior lens coating which works similar to Bushnell's Rainguard and something they really do not advertise, as well as pop turrets for easy resetting to zero. The Climate Control coating is something that I really find unnecessary as I rarely hunt conditions when this is needed, but pop turrets is feature that makes life a lot easier.
The exterior of the scope is beautifully finished in silver without flaws, except for the Sightron emblem having a very slight blemish which would be unnoticed by anyone save myself who is very compulsive and detailed. The magnification ring moves through the range with a fair amount of force, enough to emphasis the feel of precision and to impede any accidental movement. Just right. The eye piece has standard American style focusing with a lock up ring. Simple and easy. Everything feels well fit and gives the impression of a very high quality product.
The turret caps screw on and off without binding or catching and are metallic, I assume aluminum. The turrets themselves have a well machined appearance without brass shavings to be found or rough areas at the base showing. Everything appears very finished. There is a crisp tactile and audible click through each 1/4 inch movement with each turret and the pop up feature is smooth and clean.
Optics are crystal clear from edge to edge. Color rendition shows no obvious flaws and there is no significant chromatic aberration or flare. This is from a brief session with the scope, not an extensive period of time viewing multiple objects. The reticle appeared jet black at all times without any browning and was easily focused, actually right out of the box without my reading glasses. Resolution obviously appeared good, but more objective testing was not performed.
The scope has not been mounted on a rifle, so no further information can be given.
I have to admit I am biased towards Sightron rifle scopes. They offer solid products at very reasonable products. This scope was purchased at www.midwayusa.com on clearance for about 297 and there is a 75 dollar rebate, which is in the mail already. For about 225 dollars I have what I consider a world class scope that is all that one needs for hunting purposes and can do what any other scope of similar magnification and objective size regardless of price. Or lets put it another way, given the optical and mechanical excellence of this scope in this magnification and objective format, there is no other scope regardless of money that would allow me to harvest more game. Now one could argue that on the converse that there are lesser expensive scopes that could do the same thing and I could not argue with that either. However, 225 for such a high quality product is not to much to pay. 1500 is a lot to pay. I will save my money and buy a used Cooper or Weatherby rifle. You can shoot a used rifle like these with this scope, but you cannot shoot a 1500 scope without a rifle. Oh, one more thing, I am not saying buy an Osprey.
