Ok as a gift to myself for graduating this year I am going to buy silencer. Who makes the best and can we see some pics, please?

I also know that I need to get a tax stamp from BATFE. Is the paperwork available somewhere online, or will the company send it to me.

That's sort of like asking "who makes the best gun". Go here & do some reading then find yourself a local dealer, hopefully someone who has stock, and they should handle the paper work you need. You may also consider creating a Revocable Living Trust to stream line the approval/transfer process.

That is an easy one.

In .22lr
Ruger standard for pistol.
Marlin Model 60 for rifle.

In Centerfire
FNP-9
Rem 700

Of course opinions vary, but they are wrong.

For a .22lr silencer, ALL major names produce quality products. The features that vary are: weight, length, diameter, color, and first round pop. They're all very, very quiet with subsonic ammo.

For all others, features vary, cost widely varies, and sound varies. Do research, I suggest Silencer Talk (www.silencertalk.com)

As for F4s online, www.titleii.com has them. As for needing that, you'll have to go through a Class 3 dealer in your state, and they will provide the forms for you.

You need to visit the SilencerTalk forum and spend a week or two reading through the archives. The resale market for used silencers is lousy, so they are essentially a lifetime purchase. That makes it worthwhile to do lots of good research before jumping in. I read SilencerTalk for like six months before purchasing my first can.

Conqueror has given very sound advice - you DO NOT want to buy a silencer you'll be unhappy with.

First I think I have already seen the one I want I just cant find the pic!

It was about 6" long and on a Blued Ruger MKII. It looked like the modern bull barrel until you read the etching on the side. I saw it before I left for DC in early May.

It looked alot like this one but on a Ruger MKII.

A number of companies make those: AWC, Gemtech, John's Guns, NFA Investments, etc. However, I wouldn't recommend an integral suppressor like that as a first purchase. Good muzzle cans are equally quiet and can be used on multiple host guns.

You mentioned Marlin M60, there is no easy way to put a silencer on it as it has a tubular magazine that loads from the front. A typical silencer would have to be unscrewed for loading it.

Those 4 mentioned above are what I consider some of my best shooters. I would like a can for each, but I really only want one first on a Ruger .22 then maybe FNP or Rem 700.
I shoot .22 lr every session, and I just want an integral one for my Ruger MKII. I have one of each RUGER standard, MKII, & MKIII. I wont put it on the standard as it has sentimental value, but the II & III are fair game.

the thrice-linked silencertalk website DOES have some interesting info, but you should also realize it has extreme bias towards one particular mfg as the forum host designs cans for that mfg.

I mostly disagree with that statement. While it's true that an AAC employee owns the site, he gives a subforum and moderator powers to any manufacturer who wants one. AAC also offers a free booth and presentation time to any silencer company who wants to attend their semi-annual silencer shoot. Just take the posts of AAC employees for what they are, and you won't have much trouble with bias there.

Kansas?

Better go get friendly with your local Chief LEO and see if he will even sign off on one. Odds are, he won't unless you are his brother-in-law or something!

Up until July of this year, Kansas did not allow anyone to own a suppressor, and IMO, it's still kind of a gray area in most jurisdictions.
Old laws die hard!

Form a trust or corporation and the Chief's opinion becomes meaningless as you no longer need his signature. I would avoid police interaction while shooting though, cops green/unfriendly to NFA are known for saying the dumbest things.

Also, get a STEEL 22 silencer so you can clean it aggressively. Prefereably one that comes apart. SWR Spectre and Tactival Innovactions Quest come to mind.

a silencer is something i would love to be able to have. but up here in michigan, if you have one, you go to jail! i will just have to be noisy.

No, if you have one AND are caught with it you goto jail.

Malum prohibitum.

If you're in the UP and have plenty of woods to shoot in, no one would ever know, hell bring a couple of loud guns to mask yourself. hah. Its just like washington state, its one of those things that silencer owners dont talk about.

Goto the woods, do NOT bring any fairweather friends. Shoot silencer. Go home.

Just this past May we got the priveledge of being able to apply and receive Class III from the State. Hence it is no longer illegal.
I just need the BATFE forms and to build a trust at Commerce, I was going to do that anyway to make the State give me matching funds for my daughters college fund. One more benefit as I see it.
Kansas has very limited woods, we are very much a grass covered desert. I have made bottle nipple silencers as well as pop bottle silencers when I was growing up but this would be legit to use at the Capitol City Gun Club.

www.silencerresearch.com - for alternative pov

Seriously - do your research, Used suppressors aren't worth much -
Buy right once and be happy.

I tired to get away with buying a 223 can and use on all my 22LR's and 223's - that meant I had to buy a 223 can that could be taken apart and to clean all the crud 22LR's leave behind - only one I found was TAC-16 which is quiet and does clean fairly easily but it's heavy and looks like heck on a 22LR pistol.

Not that much better on a 22 rifle and I wound up buying a Tac-65 (TAC-67 steel can was discountinue and the Quest hadn't come out yet?) It's Aluminum and light weight and can be clean'd but not rated for full auto use.

I then looked for a 308 can that was quiet for use with subsonic and super sonic, I wanted one I could clean so I could shoot cast bullets - no cleanable can out there - found cyclone was rated well with both velocity ranges so order one (had to wait a long time for AAC to produce - lesson check with several suppliers to find one in stock and buy and have sent to your local dealer).

Best advise on first can, pay the money forget you ordered it and be pleasantly surprised when you dealer calls to say your paperwork's in and you can pick up your new toy.

If you fear bias at SilencerTalk, then indeed see SilencerResearch instead. The fears are largely unfounded though; while there are relationships and preferences present on the board, the whole silencer community is so small that it's hard to have any kind of discussion without some room for allegations of bias. Note that I said "allegations": that one manufacturer seems to have great influence there says more about the quality of the product, involvement in the community, and desirable associations than "bias". Other cans are discussed, many very favorably. It's just a really small industry to start with.

if you have one AND are caught with it you goto jail.
Semantics.
"have one" = you manufactured it without BATFE approval and $200 tax payment, or you AND someone else conspired to transfer it without BATFE approval and $200 tax payment. We're not talking minor state infractions here, we're talking 10 years in federal prison and $250,000 fine for both you and any conspirators; you want to play that against "don't get caught", I suggest you discuss it somewhere other than this board.
Its just like washington state,
No, it's NOT just like Washington state. Suppressor possession is legal there, so you have legal ways to get one. What you're suggestion has NO legal way to get to mere possession.

One thing most don't take into account when buying a suppressor , is for them to really be most effective , the ammo needs to be subsonic. If you don't want to constantly buy subsonic ammo , get something with a fully suppressed bll , like a 10/22 or a 22 bolt gun or a Ruger MkII pistol.

No, if you have one AND are caught with it you goto jail.

Malum prohibitum.

Some of the worst advice I have read on any forum.

Firing super-sonic ammo with a suppressor is a desirable end, removing an awful lot of the noise albeit not all.

Yes, do be aware that subsonic is required for anything even close to "Hollywood quiet". .223 in particular is NOT conducive to subsonic, and while such ammo exists it is very expensive, does not cycle the action, and is little more effective than .22LR.

Also, get a STEEL 22 silencer so you can clean it aggressively.

Keep in mind that these will weigh more more than aluminum (or titanium) cans. I tried both, and preferred the aluminum variety.

While it is true that to be really quiet the ammo needs to be subsonic, suppressors are pretty effective either way. There is still a crack when using supersonic ammo, but I've found the guns to be much quieter from the shooter's perspective. This is especially true on things like SBR ARs.
