I have acquired a Simmons Mag Scope made in Japan and a Simmons Aetec Scope made in the Philippines. I am curious which is the better quality scope? The one made in the Philippines or the one made in Japan?
Thanks roc1

are they junk?

You will have to test them and tell us. Jap scopes and Philippines scopes are low range items right now.

I know the Philippine made 44 Mag and WTC were good scopes. They weren't on par with the top tier Japan made scopes but they seem to certainly be right there with the base model Japan made scopes. I have no experience with their Japan made scopes but I think they were of roughly the same quality as the Philippine made scopes. I would think both would be fairly close to equal quality and both were good scopes. Not top tier but certainly above the cheap stuff they make today. I have a 44 Mag and it rivals my buckmaster 6-18. Colors don't come through quite as well but the images are similar in clarity to give a comparison to something made today.

The Aetec will have higher quality Meade glass from what I understand. The newer models with the TrueZero system seem to work very well from the inexpensive 8-Point and up. But you'll have to let us know I haven't ever looked through the Aetec or 44 mag series.

I had an Aetec that had incredible optical quality, generous eye relief, and nice magnification. It lasted a total of 3 shots on a light weight 300 Win Mag. I replaced it with another and it lasted 5 shots.

Great optics on a clear scope. I cannot recommend one based on my experience. I am sure it would be fine on a light recoiling rifle that never gets dropped.

I have little hands on experience with the new Simmons Aetec and best of my knowledge none with the 44Mag., however I have been burnt by Simmons enough to refuse to buy another. Right or wrong that is where I stand. I will say that Simmons has alright optical quality (not great by any stretch, but there are much worse). Same goes for BSA, NCStar, and Tasco (save for the SuperSniper which I refuse to purchase for other reasons). There are others that I generally stay away from, but they have held together with mediocre results. Amongst these are Barska and Leapers.

:)

The current China Simmons and the Philippine Simmons are worlds different. I will say I have kept mine to rimfires and am not sure I would be confident in it on a big centerfire. Also the optical quality of the Philippine scope was worlds better than the 8 point I had. Anything new I really wouldn't touch, but the older, discontinued stuff seems to hold up fairly well to the lighter recoiling rifles. From my experiences the Philippine made Simmons is a decent step up from today's Simmons, BSA, Tasco, NCStar, etc.

look on the japanese scope, there should be a small , oval shaped tag on it somewhere, that says something like 'govt. inspected'. For decades, japan was dead serious about their quality control, in particular on optics, and their stuff had to pass some mighty rigorous inspections, for them to pass. Japanese made glass, on japanese made parts, and assembled in Japan, by japanese workers. So then, if you have a toyota that still kicks ASD@#RWsss from the 1970's, and some killer old made binos, cameras, or other, then you will figure out where I am going with this; I have an old Tasco Japanese made scope, that is a 6x24, that has two windows in the eyepiece, one for rangfinding, and one for guestimating the size of your animal at certain distances. it then has replaceable turret rings at the top, from a standard zero, that you can replace and just turn to the marked distances, they are marked from 100 to 500 meters, and submarked ever 25 yards. there are 5 of these discs, starting with a 22lr disc, then slower centerfires, then standard speed centerfires, faster centerfires, and finally Weatherby mag type centerfires.
And lemme tell you; the darn things work.
So therefore, I say, stick with the Japanese older stuff, you cannot go wrong.
Even with the new glass/optics; they still are double tough, and do not farm out the parts or mfgrg of the bits. Look at Weaver scopes, they are still top notch.

I used to think the 44 Mag series was the best thing for the money.

I have owned 4 of the 44 Mags. and I would have to say you are right! I have never used them on a rifle with more recoil than an 30-06.
