Hello everybody. So, the story goes like this, My father gave me his Unertl BV20 scope. After 9 months of pondering, I have decided that I want to put it on a single shot. In doing some research, it seems that Ruger is the only company still making a single shot for under $1,000. I would love to spend the $5k or so for a nice custom single shot to put under it, but contrary to the beliefs of some people, the military does not exactly pay all that well. Am I looking in the wrong place? I know the Ruger number 1 is a good single shot, but is it my only option? Just to clear up any wonderings, I want to make a target/varmit shooter out of it, but still have the ability to take larger animals with it. Not moose or elk or anything like that, but maybe deer or pronghong when I get back out west. Thanks for reading and for your thoughts.

An Encore?

Barring that, you can always look at various hi-wall actions...I have seen 'em in all different kinds of caliber...plus it would definitely have more style and charisma over an Encore. :)

You might find a sub-$1000 1885 (Winchester or Browning high wall as mentioned) online at Guns America or Gunbrokers. I have seen them there. Remington puts out a single shot rifle (SPR18) in their Spartan line. Word is they are somewhat rough on the fit and finish; I'm not sure about trigger pull, nor how easy the trigger is to work on. They have an 11mm groove for mounting a scope. A 200-$250 rifle.

The Ruger No.1 has adherents who say their accuracy is all in load development. Others say aftermarket triggers and a different anchor in the forearm help. I don't know either way. Check out Rugerforums if you get a No. 1.

How about the NEF/H&R Handi-Rifles? They're only in the $200-300 range, and quite a few people report very good results. I've been thinking about one in .22-250, as a dedicated coyote gun.

A custom single shot doesn't have to cost $5k. Jim Fleming at Fenris Wolf Arms in Oklahoma can build a nice one on his I-series falling block action. His prices start at about $2500.

single shots

polarpanda, you must not have been looking very hard. dfaugh and redneck are both right, the nef and tca encore are both good single shots. rossi also makes decent singles. the nef is a nice rifle is you dont plan on any customization. the triggers can be a bit crude and my gunsmith says they are made af an alloy and dont take kindly to mods. timney or some other aftermarket company may make a replacement, but the point of buying an nef is cost, so why pay half again as much as the rifle is worth? the encore on the other hand is a fantastic rifle. any barrel, stock, and forearmcan be swapped onta a single receiver.

I think the Ruger #1 is your best option IMO they are great guns well built. They may not be the tac drivers that some bolt guns are but 99.9% of the people wont be able to tell the difference.

All- thanks for all the info. I know my research has not been as thorough as I would like it to be, and you have given me more places to look. Once again thanks for the info.

TCarms stock

About the TC encore, on the tc site, ALL of the pictures are taken with the barrel pointing to the right. I need to see the left side. Or if someone here knows, they could just tell me. The sight says that the stocks are "monte carlo" Just how monte carlo are they? If you are wondering why, I am left handed.

lefty encore

polar, check out eabco.com for all sorts of high quality stocks and acc for your encore. they have a really nice walnut thumbhole stock that they offer in lefty. you can also buy a complet gun from them and bypass buying a factory rifle that may not be speced the way you want it. good hunting.

here is another vote for the encore.I bought my first last year and now up to 3 barrels.25/06,375 win and a custom 7.5X55.just takes a couple of mins to change barrels:) .
