Most 12ga single shots kick like an angry mule… there’s a reason our ancestors Stateside used the equivalent of a 20ga smoothbore for their “one gun”.There are a couple of the 20 gauge Ithaca model 66 shotguns on Gunbroker.
On of the 20 gauges has a buck barrel with rifle sights starting bid is $695.
To expensive for my wallet.

There is a 12 gauge listed also.
These 12 gauges kick like an angry mule.
Any shotgun. Shot “scatters”- ie “scatter-gun”Well, it's not exactly a scatter gun with a 24 inch barrel. And, it's not 12 or 20 Guage. It is a 410. But, it is a single shot. Made sometime between 1933 and 1943. View attachment 1256487
So, Exactly what is a " Scatttergun"? I always thought a scattergun was a shotgun with something less than a 18 inch barrel. ??
So, If you fire a cartridge with more than one projectile from a rifle or handgun. Say, like snake shot. Then that rifle or handgun would become a "scatter gun?" How about a gatlinggun or a rotary machine gun? They seem to scatter out when you fire a bunch at a time?Any shotgun. Shot “scatters”- ie “scatter-gun”
I bet it has as much to do with the cost of the guns....I read somewhere that in the Amazon forests the natives prefer single shot shotguns because of their reliability in the harsh conditions. I prefer single or double break open guns myself.
That's exactly why there is a good Pachmayer pad on mine. It helps a lot with recoil and fit for long armed me.Most 12ga single shots kick like an angry mule… there’s a reason our ancestors Stateside used the equivalent of a 20ga smoothbore for their “one gun”.
And parts availability as well… I highly doubt the Amazon driver will deliver to the AmazonI bet it has as much to do with the cost of the guns....
I can attest to this. Back in the 90s my father took me on a mission trip with his church to the Amazon. We went cayman hunting one night in a canoe. I was the guy holding the flash light. He had a single shot 20 gauge. Well we came up on 3 cayman 3 different times very close. Each time was a “click”. He only had 3 shells. I don’t know if his firing pin was broken or 3 bad shells. My Portuguese is non existent. Good times. I wish I could have given him more ammo. I left him with my 3 C-cell battery mag light. I would not be surprised if he still uses it.I read somewhere that in the Amazon forests the natives prefer single shot shotguns because of their reliability in the harsh conditions. I like them for field use, it's very satisfying cracking the action open after each shot, and pulling out that spent round followed by a trailing stream of fresh gunsmoke. I was doing skeet shooting recently with a friend's single shot 12 guage, and I loved it!
I would never want to rely on one for home defense, or dangerous game defense though... When you say you have one by your headboard at the moment, is that also what you're using it for?
Forgot to mention, you’d have to pick up your cap every shot, especially on the high flyers straight up!I still have the old 36 inch full choke single shot 10 gauge I bought sometime around 78-80. Haven’t shot it in many decades but when you could still use lead, a 2 1/4 oz load of copper plated BBs was the real deal on geese.
