Sitting in a deer blind...

Over the years, most of my biggest bucks were spotted on windy days, especially if the wind was not going to die down at dark. Windy days are good for still hunting as one can get away with more movement and the sound of footsteps are drown out.

I am looking at my best buck on the wall. He was taken after 2 days in a tree stand with 20 mph winds and gust over 35. High temps were in the 30's. I almost had to take a Dramamine to stay in the tree and was bundled up like an Eskimo. Like BigBore said. You can't kill them from the couch.

I didn't hunt much this season, not deer, anyway. I'm in the post oak woods and we had a bumper crop of acorns. Haven't seen a deer on the camera for a month and I only see one now and then. No hogs, even. Seems they like acorns, too. So, I haven't wasted my time. If we don't have so many acorns next season, we should have plenty of healthy deer. Nobody is shooting much around here, everyone complaining about the acorns.

Glad you got some meat. :D Enjoy the chili. :D

We had a bumper crop of acorns too. I am so glad that I grew hunting deer before the use of feeders. I spent a lot of time scouting and filled all 6 tags with the biggest being a nice heavy racked 9 pt. If they don't come to you, go to them. I love it.

My granddaughter and I spent yesterday morning in a blind with a squall line for company. 5" of rain in less than an hour, lightning crashing and 30 mph winds. Oh, I almost forgot about the tornado warning.

Even with all that, 3 deer showed up during a slight lull in the storm ... but they were 450 yards away.

I have hunted in the rain and in the wind. Seems as if I always had more luck on the windy days. The deer seem to be nervous and want to be up and about, still not as much movement as on those clear, crisp, very still mornings though.

I shot this buck at 11:45 am because it was raining so hard I didn't want to get out of ground blind and walk to truck.

That's great if you have enough land to hunt that way. Land here is $10,000 an acre, so I couldn't afford much. The woods are so thick, feeders are about the best way, anyhow. I'm more of a bird hunter, anyhow. Deer hunting is something I do when I'm bored. I'd rather be bird hunting, ducks, geese, doves. But, we have lots of game here. I keep meat in the freezer, if not deer, then hogs. But, hogs ain't been interested in corn, either. I thought about gathering up a bunch of acorns in the back yard to bait the trap with.

Yep, deer hunting in Texas is more and more a rich man's sport. I killed my first deer on a lease in Leaky, Texas that my grandpa had when I was 11. This was in 1963. No feeders back then, and I hunted a heavily traveled trail, but we had 25,000 acres on which to FIND those trails and things are more open in the hill country. We did plant oats back then, though, for a food crop. I'm going to plant a food plot for next season and try that as well as feeding.

I remember my grandpa griping when he dropped out of that lease that it was getting just TOO expensive.....$125 a gun. ROFL! Good luck finding a decent lease now days for $3000 a gun. Meh, I don't care for deer hunting THAT much. But, we bought out in the woods to retire. I have a gun range in my back yard and my box blind and tree stand about 200 yards into the woods. I'm happy. I plan to smoke some venison sausage and some store bought ribs on my smoker this afternoon and maybe pop a few rounds through my Bushmaster M4. Livin' the good life. :D

It is all good MC. I miss the quail hunting. Ducks around here is hit or miss unless you want to fight the crowds and the guides in east Arkansas. For some odd reason the Game and Fish Comm. stopped the Hog hunting on public land unless it is deer season. Said that trapping is more effective. Private land is open all year. Shame because there is 170,000 acres of Nation Forest 5 miles from my house. It wouldn't hurt my feelings if I had a pork shoulder in the smoker. Makes my mouth water just thinking about it.

Well, see, difference in location. I have excellent duck hunting available up and down the Texas coast. I used to live ON the coast, but I ain't far from it, now. :D The duck hunting is on federal, state, and tide lands, some of the best duck hunting available in the nation and it gets little PR probably because it's mostly public and no guides profit from it.

Near where I live in the Eagle Lake, Garwood area, the goose hunting reigns supreme. Have to use an outfitter because it's all on leased rice fields, but it's excellent. I only hunt geese a few times a year, though. There is some public hunting along the coast, some of it pretty decent, but I find goose hunting too much work NOT to use an outfitter. :D

And, then there's the doves. My buddy north of Waco owns or leases 500 acres of farmland. He runs cows and goats. There's LOTS of doves up there and I always open the north zone at his place. He comes down here for the geese. :D

But, when dove season is over and I'm not making a run to Port Lavaca for the ducks, I just walk 200 yards back into the woods, fire up the heater if it's cold, the thermocell if it isn't, and sit back in that nice comfy high back office chair and try to stay awake. LOL!
