sks box mag to detachable

I have a sks with 10 rnd. box mag. Is there a way to remove the box mag and fit it with a detachable? It say norinco china on the receiver

Yes, it can easily be done and the detachable magazines are readily available.

However, the bolt must be back to remove or insert a detachable magazine. In my opinion, it's not worth the trouble. Just stay with the fixed mag and get lots of stripper clips; it just works better in my opionion.

Also, it might be good to check on any legalities, depending on where you live.

Also, without doing a conversion job on it, you have to use those removable mags with the big "duck lip" on it. Not quite as easy as just slapping a new mag in. And the SKS aftermarket removable mags aren't exactly known for their reliability. I had a 30 rder that would only function when loaded with about 12 rounds, and a 20 rder that wasn't any better. Stripper clips can be very quick once you get used to them.

If you find magazines that your rifle likes, you will have no problems, I've always found USA magazines to work well in my SKS's. Just remove the trigger group to get the fixed mag out. Directions are on the back of the USA magazine box.

The detachables are not the way to go, but I have a fixed 20 rounder that works flawlessly on my chinese SKS. I would recommend them but they are $50 at SKS Man and it looks identical to mine. I have also heard about adapters that allow for the use of AK magazines but I have never seen one, some research on THR might have information about them. Also, there are a small number of SKS models that were built to use AK mags but they typically run around $300+, I saw one at my local gunshop but it looked a little too worn out for my interest. The only time I would get a detachable is if I were hunting and had to bring the capacity to 5 rounds to be legal.

Also, I know of no one with a particularly reliable removable mag. They might exists, but I don't know where.

If you need removable mags, get other than an SK. I, for example, do not own one. But they do work if strippers make you happy.
