SKS, Really?

OK, If the Saiga ia not a SKS maybe I should have said the Saiga is by far the most accurate of the several SKS and AK type rifles I have owned. Still not a sniper rifle. It's a fantasy.

Yeah, a Saiga is not an SKS by any stretch, although chambered for the same cartridge. It is an AK design action.

My Saiga is incredibly accurate offhand @ 50Y using the stock factory sights. Even though I have the scope mount, I’ve not shot it scoped … she is a ‘safe queen’. Rare(r) longer barrel model shown above that of my ‘Bubba’d’ SKS.

I desperately wish I still had targets from my first sks, it was unbelievably accurate compared to the 50+ others I've played with over the years. Every once in a while there is a unicorn that works. My cz 527 in 7.62x39 is almost moa capable with handloads, so the cartridge is up to it..

I don't think anyone expects an SKS, AK, or even an AR to be on par with any bolt action precision rifle or if they do it is caused by unrealistic expectations. I can hit a pop can regularly at 100 yards with my SKS's, M1 carbines, or AR's and that is enough to satisfy me as they are all made to hit the "center of mass" at ranges beyond 100 yards. I don't expect them to shoot the eye out of a chicken at 500 yards but they sure are a lot of fun to shoot. Not everyone is involved in a competitive shooting activity. As for SKS's though, my Yugo's are more accurate than my Chinese models.

I watched the movie and found it to be WAY over the top in terms of Hollywood crazy. It was good for rainy Saturday afternoon, especially the car chase scenes and the SKS with a small telescope for a sight. I did enjoy the first 3 movies for what they were, but Fury Road was bad.

To keep it somewhat on topic for this forum, my personal Yugo SKS will reliably keep a 4-5 inch group off the bags with cheap bulk ammo and iron sights. It did better with the American made brass cased ammo I bought once, but at 4 times the cost per round it was a treat not soon repeated. My best friend had one that was a laser with the ammo it liked (2 inch group at 100 yards / iron sights). They truly are individuals that need to be fed what they like.

These links might provide quite a number of tv shows and movies with the SKS.
The 'main' database has many other gun types used in entertainment, Many of you already know this, therefore this is mentioned for the benefit of people who are Unfamiliar.

This page has quite a number of links. You folks also might try to look for favorites such as the Walther PPK, Sig P228, FAL, M-14 etc.

That's interesting.

It had two great things going for it just by their absense: Tina Turner and repurposed shoulder pads.

(What was up with sooooo many shoulder pads in 80s sci-fi and dark future films?)

Watched all 6 episodes of “American Primeval” on Netflix the last couple of nights, pretty gory and violent, somewhat formulaic.

The director said he wanted authenticity, and looks like they got it right as far as firearms. Takes place in 1857, no repeating rifles, single shot muzzle loaders only. No SA Army revolvers, no cartridges, open top cap and ball only.

Between the violence, gore, and profanity, I wouldn’t recommend this for children, probably not for certain adults. Includes the Mormon Meadows massacre of an entire pioneer wagon train.

Some of the old Mountain men at the fort were even rocking flintlocks. The assortment of old timey guns was nicely done, but if people were really killing each other at the rate the show had them doing it, it's amazing anyone survived long enough to settle out west at all.

Watched a Mad Max sequel last night on Netflix, “Furiosa“, and one of the characters was using an undisguised SKS with a huge scope as a very long range sniper rifle, and operating it like a bolt action. And hitting with regularity, of course.

I‘m usually ready to suspend reality when watching movies like anyone else, but curious what the armorer was thinking when they told the director that rifle was appropriate for that job?

If only…
I haven't seen the movie, but having used a SKS for many years I can tell you this.

1. The sks can be used as bolt gun if the gun has the gas port blockage in the right position "Yugoslavia sks" grenade launcher mode. This makes it a hair more accurate.

2. There are some SKS that has side mounts like the AK that allows it to use scopes...

3. SKS barrels are longer than the AK, therefore achieving a bit more velocity, specifically with the gas port closed. Is it a sniper or precision gun? Absolutely not. Is it a perfectly good choice is a Mad Max/Furiosa scenario? Absolutely Yes. Totally doable.

This movie was a steaming pile of doo doo.

I saw that flick and actually liked it. I think it showcased the Ruger mini in a positive light. The folding stock was an original Ruger sourced stock. I liked the scenes that showed George gunsmithing and hand loading for the Ruger. Those scenes seemed accurate and well done to me. I would rate the movie 2.5 - 3.0 stars out of four.

Semiauto rifles aren't legal in Australia. The SKS gas system must be certified nonfunctional and the rifle used as a straight pull bolt action. I've seen Garands done the same way in England.
