Sleepwalking? stupid questions inside

For example - I've had times when I swear I could see someone standing in the room only to wake up and realize it's my coat hanging on a chair or something.

And to add... are you a five-year-old? Yeah, your eyes play tricks at night. Didn't your parents and/or appointed guardians cover this with you?

When people hyphenate God in that fashion, it's almost like they're saying the word God itself is offensive, moreso than if they were simply to say "god damn it" or whatever. Kinda irksome, because it's additionally insulting to anyone who finds such phrases offensive.

That's funny - your analysis is 100% backwards.

The name of G-d is not offensive - it's so holy that Jews are very careful when/where they write it. Observant Jews will write G-d instead of the full word out of respect for the name. If the name of G-d is written on a piece of paper, that piece of paper must be reverently buried, as it has been made holy by the name of G-d. The piece of paper/parchment cannot be thrown away in the trash, as that would be insulting to the name of G-d. Such a piece of paper must be buried in a ganiza.

Some of those folks will not even say the name of G-d, except in specific prayers. Outside of that context, they will say "Ha-Shem", which means "the name". For example, instead of "praise G-d", they will say, "Baruch Hashem" ("praise the Name").

I don't happen to agree 100% with those folks - I think that the prohibition only applies to the Hebrew "proper" name of G-d - the tetragammon. The English word (derived from German and Indo-European, hence pagan) does not - to me - have that weight. Nor does the common Hebrew name - a plural form. But I do write G-d out of respect for those folks.

More on topic - sleepwalking may be a dramatic example, but I think that anyone who has a handgun in easy reach of a bed has to look honestly at themselves, and figure out how confused they might be if woken suddenly from a deep sleep.

I sleep deeply, wake up slowly, and have kids in the house. For me, a gun on the night stand is a disaster waiting to happen. :)

Gee, I come back 12 hours later to find that my spelling habits have taken over the whole thread! As has been pointed out, it is a habit that comes out of a gesture of reverence, and not out of some silly effort at political correctness. In some circles, it is the only proper way to spell it.

I probably should have left my appeal to a higher power out of my post... maybe I should have started with this? "For the sake of f-zzy kitt-ns, don't keep a revolver next to your bed." :neener:

I don't sleep walk, and I wake up like someone turned on a light switch, but my older son did on occasion when he still lived at home. My guns were all locked up then and remain so now while my younger son still lives at home. My younger son does not sleep walk as far as we know, but he is still a child. :)

I have quick access to one gun, and if given enough time, access to all. The dogs may help give me some "lead time" here.

You have to assess your own individual situation and play it accordingly.

"For the sake of f-zzy kitt-ns, don't keep a revolver next to your bed."
I like it. :)

Gee whiz, jeepers, and gosh dang it.

People should just get over it, but in reality, I intentionally try to leave any reference to "you know who" out of my posts. It just opens the door.

Having done something that you can't remember doing is scary. It inevitably leads to the question "What could I have done in that state?" Because you don't remember doing it, you assume that you were not in control of your senses, and that is scary.
However, I would just like to raise the possibility that just because you aren't forming memories at the time, doesn't necessarily mean that you are acting differently than you normally would.
Notice Funderb brushed his teeth in his sleep. He didn't brush his ears with his toothbrush, he brushed his teeth.
Just food for thought is all I am offering.

Does trying to insult strangers on an internet forum at 5 am constitute a sleep problem?

I'm not going to revisit the thread, Yama. Feel free to continue though.

Thanks to those who replied.

About the "G-d" thing:

I disagree with trying to censor yourself to avoid offending others. That's their problem--not yours. But, as was explained, it's a religious practice to not spell the word out directly. There's nothing wrong with observing a religion's rules.

There--we all learned something new! Tolerance is the best way. :)

On topic:

If you're afraid of something happening in your sleep, take the necessary steps to avoid a problem. A safe, like has been suggesting 19 times already, is a good idea.

I might go so far as to try to talking to your doctor about sleepwalking.

Between religious observances, name calling, finger pointing and unwarranted suppositions, this thread is far off the OP's intended topic. It's closed.
