Slept through opening morning, changing perspective on the way I used to hunt

Deer around here seem to have an internal clock. Opening weekend of gun season their traveling and bedding habits change. It may be that it just coincides with beginning of our rut, or it could be because this is about the time all the soybeans get cut, or both. Idk for sure, but it definitely happens. Does and young dumb bucks are still active in the morning, but the mature bucks are often bedded down or stay in the thick until noon.

The big bucks know that all the stomping around the woods before daylight means stay in bed until the stomping is headed out of the woods

I am overweight, work 65hrs a week, other commitments, etc. I used to go every weekend, out the door at 5am and in the woods an hour before the sun comes up. Now I find myself hunting the afternoon more than the evening and my all day Saturday and Sunday hunting trips are over. I have only been out 2x this year. I have 9 days off starting on Friday and plan to hunt all day 5-6 of those days. Since starting blood pressure meds I get cold easily and my couch and bed feel better than a long, cold walk and metal tree stand all day.

Don’t hunt much but here in the Mojave the legal shooting areas fill up quick so you’ve literally got to be at the public shooting areas sometimes before sunup to get a spot.

I’ve found if I’m rushed, I get pissy. If I get pissy, it stops being enjoyable. Being proactive and having everything staged and packed ready to go helps a ton.
