Slightly Non-Mainstream .40 Pistols

I know one 40sw you will not see around, A Kahr TP40. You will see the CM, PM the CW & P and the other all metal models but the TP is not seen as it the same physical size of a 1911 commander but 22oz and to big for most wanting a small pistol.

I found myself in a similar position . I wanteded a .40, but I have enough Glocks.

I went with the FNS-40. Great feel, elegant design, stock night sites, 3 mags, and a nice low bore axis to tame the snappy round.

.40 is a nice round to shoot while ammo is scarce. Even at inflated prices, its affordable enough to plink with.

I'm really digging this gun. For a full sized service pistol, its got a lot going for it. Its been enough to sway me toward the merits of the .40. The biggest being is that I can find ammo in a potent and popular caliber as a reasonable price.

I'd go CZ out of the choices you listed. I really like the ergonomics and the stock trigger is pretty decent.

Sold off my 40 S&W's did not like the snappy recoil, I like 45 ACP's better. But if you are looking for a 40 S&W that is not mainstream then try one of these, great fun to shoot and practically no recoil.

I recommend trying the PX4 in .40, the grip for me points naturally and I love to shot mine. Magazines are expensive but readily available with 10, 14 or 17 capacity.

IMO the best value in a .40 with the least recoil is the Stoeger (née Beretta) Cougar. The combination of the weight of the gun and rotary barrel tames the snappy .40. Well made, accurate and relatively inexpensive.

Zastava offers the CZ 999, chambered in 40 S&W, but the standard mag capacity is only 10 rounds. Loosely based on the P226, from what I've read, but borrows a bit from the Walther P88. I nearly chose on of these (CZ999) over a Sig 2022, in 9MM, but went with the Sig. BTW, the 2022 in 40 would be a nice package, I really enjoy mine in 9MM, and believe it's a fine, utilitarian handgun. Don't have whole lot of range time with the 2022, but am warming up to the DA/SA trigger pull.

Bersa Thunder 40 has 13rds.
Nice BHP/P88 mix in looks, IMO looks best in all nickel or duo-tone.

I'm on several to be notified list for the P99AS Compact in either 9 or 40. In fact, two days ago I bought a PPQ9. Now I have both PPQ9 & PPQ40.

BTW, another .40S&W for the OP to consider is the Stoeger Cougar 8040 (think Beretta). More of a HD than CCW. Nonetheless, the rotating barrel & size of 8040 makes for an excellent shooter.
