small pistol magnum primers for small rifle

the other day I was in a gun store hunting for small rifle primers although they were out he had small magnum pistol primers and he said that I could subsitute them instead. I have heard of people using small rifle in pistols but small magnum in rifle? was he right or is this dangerous, none of my reloading manuals state that it is acceptable and I tend to believe the experts. the load is for .223 55 grain FMJ with 25 grains of benchmark.

Rifle in pistol I would do.
Pistol in rifle, no!

Pistol primer--thin cup
rifle cartridge--much more pressure
