Small Pistol Primers for .357 mag?

I
loaded some 2400 @ 12 gr. with magnum primers and a
158 gr. SWC. Think I'll do the same with SPP's and see if I can tell a difference.

kcofohio, is 2400 a fast powder? If you do load up some rounds with the SPP's let me know how they compare.

thanks

2400 would be considered a slow powder for handguns. It's the traditional magnum powder for .357.

FWIW, I started using magnum primers in mid range .357 loads with powders like Unique, HS-6 and 4756 and I get a cleaner gun and less unburned powder.

Hi, I have some Montana gold 158gr. Jhp's which I would like to load in .357 cases using a start load of 4.5gr 700 X. On searching other threads many say that I don't need a magnum primer using 700 X. I can get my hands on the magnums but already have plenty of regular small pistol primers that I can use. I would be working up to the 5.7gr max of 700 X in the future. So..... could I use the Small pistol primers or should I go with the small pistol magnums?

Thanks

It has been my experience with 357 magnum using powders at the 2400 or faster burn rate that standard small pistol primers perform better than magnum primers, accuracy wise, and give only a little up in absolute velocity.
