Small rifle primers in lieu of small pistol primers

So has anyone loaded cci 400 srp in 357 mag? I don’t have any cci 550 left and have
“heard” they are the same compound. I know it must be true because it was on the internet.
But seriously has anyone used them to load with H110 or 296?

Great Question- Running real low on SPP and fell into a good purchase of SRP.

May have to resort to using the SRP's in a CZ 75 pistol.

I use them with H110. It makes a reliable combination for my Rossi and Blackhawk.

I have shot them with #9 and 4227. My carbine has a tuned trigger so a few I had to hit twice.

Some years ago as a move to consolidate ordering primers I switched from SPP to SRP. I found a couple striker fired pistols would not reliably set off the SRP. I keep a small inventory of SPP for them but have reworked up loads for everything else to use SRP.

You should try a few and see if they work but use a slightly reduced load until you get things sorted out. They should work fine. I ended back at my origional loads in most everything.

I use SRP in my .32 Single Six, the firing pin perforated the SPP primers a few times. With SRP, there have been no more worries.

I also load them in .357 Mag cartridges. Again, all has been ok.

Stay safe.

Hi all:
Like a lot of you, I wasn't prepared for the primer shortages that's now going on.
I'm down to my last 100 small pistol primers. I do have a lot more small rifle primers which, as you know are the same diameter as small pistol primers.
Now, I did run across a post about this subject some time ago and I apologize for bringing up the same subject. As I recall, it said that small rifle primers can be used in lieu of small pistol primers.
Again, just want to make sure this is OK to do. I would have thought that small rifle primers would be a lot hotter than small rifle primers.

Thanks for replies

I have used small rifle primers for 9mm, 40 and 357 Magnum. They will work and they are a little hotter, so I would recommend starting back with load development, especially if you are near the top of the ladder. You may run into the same issue I did with light primer strikes. The cups on SRP are thicker than SP or even SPM. This is especially true in the case of CCI. This will be firearm specific. I have a Security Six that would set off the SRP's without issue and another Colt revolver that would fail about 1 out of 8 to 10 times to set off the SRP's, while it NEVER has an issue with setting off SPMP's. None of the semi-auto's had an issue with the SRP's. That may be because the Colt is an older revolver with more rounds through it than all the others put together, but it did NOT like the SRP's...

In short, don't load a ton of rounds at first. Load a handful to test and see how things go. If you can chrono the loads and compare to loads developed with SPP's, that might be informative. I did not do this at the time I was experimenting with this. If you do chrono these loads, please post your results.
