Interested in .40 Cal, what's the recoil like on the M&P40 M2.0?
I have one with a 3.6" barrel, I think they call it a compact. It has a double stack and nice comfortable grip and the recoil isn't bad at all. Definitely a bit more than any of my 9s but not nearly as stout as my 1911. It's a really nice shooter, very accurate too.

Is it a M2.0? I know they have a 3.6" and 4.0" compact. Also, what ammo do you use? I plan on using Federal Hydra Shok Deep 165 Grain JHP(Rated at 1050 FPS from a 4" barrel), which isn't nearly as hot as average .40 JHP ammo.

Best way to know is to find a range that rents them and give it ago. What one person finds as acceptable recoil may not be the same for the next person.
Yea, I plan on doing just that, but also wanted some opinions from others beforehand.

It is the 2.0, I use Hornady critical defense for carry and shoot cci blazer brass 180 grain for practice. The only thing that has given it trouble is magtech. I tried the magtech garbage in my Ruger sr40 and had the same trouble.

I have the 4" compact version. The recoil isn't bad to me. I've liked 40's for a while though. This is the third 40 I've owned.

What pistols do you own? I mean, is there a point of reference that you could relate to? To me, the .40 shoots like the 9mm, but has a bit more recoil. Power of a .45, but snappy like a 9mm.

I have a M&P 2.0 compact 3.6 in 40. I barely notice a difference in recoil between it and my 9mm’s.

This. I have the same gun as well as three of the 9mm's, a full size, compact and subcompact. I use HST 180 grain ammo and the difference in recoil to me isn't noticable compared to the 124 grain 9mm +P. It's a fantastic gun.

My FiL has a full-sized M&P in 40 caliber. I think it's the 2.0 version. It shoots just fine and is one of his preferred 40 caliber service pistols.

The recoil is nothing worth mentioning. I have the M&P 45acp version. The 40 is maybe a little peppier, but just barely.

Really, in a full-sized service pistol that fits my hand well, I feel that the recoil difference between 9mm, 40, and 45acp is barely significant.

The recoil in subcompact 40 caliber is more exciting, but a full-sized pistol soaks it up and helps me control it just fine.

For instance, I have a 9mm conversion barrel and magazine for this 40 caliber Glock 22. Imagine that my shooting buddy handed it to me loaded and I shot a magazine through it. Then he asked, "Was that 40 caliber or 9mm?" I would really have to think about it and might even guess wrong.

On the other hand, imagine that I also had the 9mm version of this Kahr 40 caliber subcompact (I don't, but let's pretend). Let's say my shooting buddy randomly put one in my hand, I shot a magazine through it, and then he asked me to guess if it was the 9mm or the 40. I would not hesitate to answer, and I would be correct 100% of the time.

In all honesty I have never shot .40 out of a subcompact pistol. I like it in a mid-sized (G-23, M&P 2.0 40 Compact) or full sized pistol but I've never had a desire to have a subcompact in .40. I prefer those in 9mm. Maybe one day someone will offer to let me shoot one though. I wouldn't be above trying it but I don't really want one.

So how exactly manageable is the recoil? Is it ridiculously mild? Is it soft shooting or just "manageable". One of my top priorities in a gun is ease of rapid fire shooting. Are follow up shots quick and easy?

To me it has less recoil than my old Ruger P-series, Less muzzle flip than the XD I had & it doesn't seem to recoil as much as a 3rd gen. G-23 I have shot. I would agree with another Deleon 517 above that the best thing you could do would probably be to rent one. Is there a range anywhere near you that has one for rent. Recoil is subjective. Different people perceive it differently.

Yea, I will definitely rent one soon. Thanks.

There is one thing a rental range might not have available as it would probably be too much trouble to keep up with. The M&P 2.0 comes with 4 interchangeable backstraps. So you can fit pretty much any hand size. Depending on the size of your hand and what they have on the pistol it could make a difference.

I have an M&P40 1.0 4.25” and a gen2 G23, to me the M&P is a bit milder in recoil, weight is close enough not to matter.

both have more snap than my M&P9 2.0

"In all honesty I have never shot .40 out of a subcompact pistol."

I kind of like recoil, so it doesn't really bother me. My hand stings a little if I empty a magazine quickly, and I have to be careful about how I hold my finger on the trigger so that it doesn't get pinched. I'm more of a revolver guy and usually carry my LCR, but the PM40 fits in the cargo pocket of my long pants pretty well, so I do CC it occasionally. I have seen what 40 caliber bullets will do to wood and random objects, so I definitely have faith in the round.

i bought my first .40 cal last summer ,it a S@W M-2.0 4" compact ,i shoot 9 MM ,.357 .Mag and .45 ,so .40 dont kick to me, diffintly a little more that 9-MM, 165 gr was a little snappier ,but 180 grain .40 cal ammo not kick much differant than a 9-MM to me, way less than my .45

I fired a full sized M&P 40 2.0 the weekend before last (while we were still relatively safe). I would say it was on the order of my Glock 19, and I really liked the feel of the grips. I had to look at the magazine it felt so slim to make sure it really was a double stack.

I have the M&P40c 1.0 and recoil is similar to my G19.

I also have an XDS 40 and that thing stings in stock form. Not quite as bad as a J-frame with .357 Magnum, but not comfortable until I put on a $10 Pachmayr grip sleeve.
