I have looked at the M&P for a little while now but don't know much about it. I have a 40SW in a Glock and XD but now would like a 9mm. I see the M&P is out in a 9mm, has anyone got one of these and can you tell me how it is working for you? Thank you

I've got a 40 cal M&P and it's functioned flawlessly. There are other threads on this forum where people have had problems with the 9mm version, but I don't know if there is a definite difference in quality between the two.

I'd wait a little longer and read some more reviews about the 9mm before I bought one if I were you, but so far the 40 cal shoots great and hasn't had any problems in over 600 rounds.

After reading what you posted Proctorman I called S&W and asked about issues with their 9mm. They listed a couple of minor issues, but said most of their issues were with the 40 because it came out first and those were corrected by the time the 9 came out. ---- I can't find any negative reviews, would sure like to know if there are any kinks they haven't worked out yet.

I've been considering the M&P for my next pistol purchase but am still on the fence. Some reviews are positive and some aren't.

I think I would get a recent production one and hope for the best. Serial numbers started with MPA, then MPB, MPC, etc and as far as I can tell are up to MPF now.

Let us know when you get one and what you think of it.

I got a M&P 40 to replace my G23. It's performed flawlessly. Feels great, shoots great. Absolutely no complaints. And apparently, you can get a trigger job that makes it a dream, unlike a Glock. Mine'll head off to Dan Burwell soon for a trigger job and beavertail removal.

I've only fondled the new M&P (both the pistol & AR). Ergonomically, they seem like nice guns....I hope to find out 1st hand how nice they shoot.

revjross, you should try to rent one from a local gun range and see what you think of it.

If you really like the 9mm, go ahead and buy it but don't use it as a primary carry weapon until you've shot plenty of rounds through it. If it has any problems whatsoever just ship it back to Smith & Wesson and they'll fix it free of charge.

Hopefully it will shoot perfectly, but you just never know with any new gun.

Good advice. I wish I could rent one but the only place that does that locally doesn't have a M&P. I'm going to order one tomorrow. I'm sure that I would like to give one a try. I think they are better looking and have more to offer than the Glock and XD that I currently have (which are good guns). I do see that several police depts have started to order these in 9 and 40's. ----- So here we go!!!

I purchased my M&P 40 in March '06 and had to send it back to the factory after ~500rds. It was having light primer strike issues. S&W has great service though and turned it around in about 2wks. My two complaint are that it has a mag disconnect (mine does, can be purchased without) and it's .40S&W. I'm not terrible found of the .40S&W round, .45ACP guy, but it does have a "4" in it so it's cool to shoot. ;)

At the club I belong to there is one member with an M&P 40. He seems to have problems with it but I don't know if he's fired a 40 before. I had problems with my steel frame 40s before I corrected my grip and got over my flinch from it.

I have an M&P .40 and the only problem I have with it was a learning curve of getting used to not being able to activate the slide release with my thumb. Its a sling-shot method only slide release and so are all the others I have seen. Other than that, I have put maybe 600 rounds with not a single problem. Accurate as hell too!

When I called S&W yesterday they said that they have are putting a new slide release on them now (all the 9's have it) that extends out a little more so you can release it with your thumb and not just a sling release. I haven't seen it yet though. Hope this takes care of it.

I've seen it. It is a good improvement for those who do not want to be limited to the slingshot method as a slide release (that, or having to hunt for the release lever). The new part seems to be a good compromise between positive grip for using the release and still being low profile.

I will try to be very humble in this post.....my m&p 9 was the worst purchase I bought in a handgun....I got a lemon.

Basically in a nutshell:

1.) bought pistol beginning of August
2.) went to shoot it, had multiple FTF's and slide stop broke
3.) sent it in
4.) got it back 5 weeks later with a free mag :)
5.) went to shoot it again
6.) slide stop was fixed, but even more FTF's
7.) barrel had excessive penning on the left side and there were some chip marks near the feedramp and rails seemed to be "grinding" heavily - hard to rack and chamber
8.) sold it and bought a CZ 75 Compact
9.) couldn't have been happier

Not to 'diss any people who own them, I got a lemon. But I will never invest in them again.

Wow Ermac, that is a sad story. I have just ordered one, I sure hope that your experience will not be repeated!! I would have dumped that gun too. I'll give a report after this weekend.
