ya but hes not a sniper. hes probibly a SDM (squad designated marksman) so hes not going for stealth and has a whole squad to back him up if he takes fire.

Agreed. A sniper would not be wide out in the open like that. He also does not care about the cartridge case flying out after he fires.

Huh? Some US Army snipers use the SR-25 weapons system right now. It ejects brass just fine. As for firing in the open, this isn't Vietnam. Some times they shoot from the open, sometimes they don't.

But I agree with Hoppy. Probably a designated marksman.

if im not mistaken most snipers remove spent shells by hand, and take thier brass with them for several reasons

Possible reloading ( dont forget sniper 7.62x51 are hand loaded)
avoid the "flash" of brass ejecting from the chamber to aid in concealment
and keep them guessing about how you style is. if they can get enough information about where you tend to shoot from based on where they find your brass they could figure where you might try to shoot next.

It is my understanding that military snipers are issued Cartridge, Special Ball, 7.62x51 NATO, M118 or M118LR. I have not heard of any instances where military snipers used reloaded ammunition in theater.

Second, the sniper is going to be nowhere near close enough for the "flash" of brass to be a factor. The M14/M21 ejects the same--brass thrown out at about a 10 degree angle to the right rear of the weapon, about 4 feet. When it exits the weapon, it is spinning horizontally. In short, it is almost impossible to see unless you are standing to the immediate right of the weapon, or looking down on top.

M-14 often used in Nam, by snipers, as I understand it. First shot kills @ 800m commonplace.

See other threadcan't find it right off, re: Sniper in the sandbox took 5 head shot in 8 second @ 400m. Bolt gun? Dunno.

What is that cheap pile of crap doing on the right side of the rifle, laser pointer from sportsmans guide or something. That's also an Army Rifle, USMC haven't put picitinny rails on the DMR... yet.

Roger that! I just finishe Shooter and basically the whole book he is trying to get the war planners to forget about Vietnam and go with a more mobile, in-your-face method. Relatively in-you-face, anyway.

Some of our spotters carried the M-14. Remember Sgt. Gilliland who made that 1250 meter shot with a M24? His unit had a few M-14s as well as modified M-16s. BTW, Gilliland and his unit are back in the states.

Don't look for too much reason behind it. I see all sorts of stuff, PG only shotguns, every gadget known to man mounted on an M4 at the same time (bipods and pistol grips and lasers and lights and spare magazines...). I'm old school, ACOG and backup iron sight is all that's on mine. Good balance.

yeah, when we can get it, have to settle for M80 quite a bit. My team has an M-14, but it hasnt gotten much use as we're still waiting for rails and optics for it

Where does this misinformation come from? There is no reloading, and M118LR (sniper 7.62x51) comes off the Lake City production line.

I think the reloading is being mixed up with military marksmenship teams. They use handloads, snipers as far as I know do not.
