I recently posted a thread about a low priced, long range rifle. Got some excellent responses (thank you) ranging from Finnish Mosin Nagants to the Swiss K-31 to inexpensive recent examples such as a Savage.

Then I had a thought - remember I'm not a distance shooter, so I don't do much shooting at long range. How would my CMP M1 Garand do at several hundred yards' distance? Does anyone ever put scopes on those things?

Thanks for the responses. I've enjoyed reading.

Well, it is a 30/06, and the round has been used at up to (and over) 1000 yards for 106 years now, there is no reason on this Earth why your Garand would not be suitable for casual marksmanship (or even local service rifle competitions) at ranges of up to 500 yards. There are some scope setups that will work, but to my knowledge, these are surplus items and you might have to knock around a bit to find one. Not your typical scope mount. Your rifle has excellent ghost ring sights, and once you learn to use them, you might end up opting against the scope anyway........
