I checked on Midway, Natchezs, Powder Valley, Grafs and others and most (all the ones listed by name) list it as out of stock. Now other things don't seem to be as badly hit, but any reason why CCI SPP is in such short supply? I mean the election is coming up, but wouldn't supplies be hit more across the board if it's fear of the Barackolpyse? Is CCI have internal isues?
So CCI #500 Small Pistol Primers seem to be a little scarce...

People like CCI. They probably stocked up.. for about a full year it seemed everyone had them in stock for around $100 for 5000. That's why they (even retailers) stocked up.. they are good, were available and very reasonably priced.
They are popular. I bought a few thousand over the summer to keep me stocked up.
I think the real reason is the upcoming election. If you were around reloading 4 years ago, you will remember that primers were the hardest hit and SPP were the hardest hit of all of the primers. There were months when you couldn't guy them because no one had them in stock, or they were charging $50+/ box.
They sure seem to have. Winchester SPP is hard to find too. Ammo isn't hard to find at least, but still it's a bit worrying.
I wasn't around then, but I have heard of it, I was hoping people wouldn't do it again. Worse is I only have 150 LRP, since I didn't initially feel comfortable with primer storage...I know I know I know...but I'm past that now....still only have 150 :banghead:

Maybe just get the minimum of whatever for now to tide you over for six months or so.

Eh, I kind of just starting out and am trying to stay pretty dead on to the published loads and for 9MM I don't know that small rifle would be a good idea....well more that I am fairly anal about following instructions and not liking to deviate (that's true of me and anything though).
I'm also reloading 30-06 (though since it's M2 Ball style, I can...and I hate myself for passing on it last weekend at the gun show, get CCI 34 primers to sub for LRP.
Part of my problem is I just can't see myself reloading a lot at first. I suspect with the new space I'll have when my wife and I move...it could increase since I won't be near a range, so reloading as a way to still be in the hobby. Ironically I'm starting to enjoy reloading just for the process itself and just the end product of ammo. There is something relaxing about studying the loads, depriming, my issue has just been need of a quiet spot. Luckily since we'll be near my parents...a large basement area is opening up, complete with an old bar top setup to work.
Don't try to substitute CCI SRP or Winchester SRP's for the CCI SPP's.
You'll find that they work perfectly and scoop them up.
That leaves less for me.

If you do a search here, there's a lot of info on that subject. If memory serves, reduce a starting load by 5% and work up. Don't take my word for it though.

Guys like me came along and when they were in stock bought 70,000 odd primers at a whack. A couple of us when in on this order and then we sorted out the extras to friends to store.
My suggestion is you get great service when you call up say Powder Valley and start talking say 50,000 CCI400's like we did.

powder valley has winchester small pistol primers in stock. could also check some of the gun shops in your area if your dead set on using cci. i usually try to split an order with someone to offset the cost of hazmat. i remember when everyone was out of stock on primers, ive stocked up. have at min 5k everything.
I also think the up coming election has a bearing on shortages that we are starting to see. Things will go back to normal like they did before. Many of us learned to stock up a bit so as not to run out of supplies will we wait. Prices really got out of hand the last time.

All I can say is, I'm getting a little worried because I'm about to fall below 10,000 CCI-500 primers and there seems to be no replacements available right now!

I only have 6K CCI 500 on hand, but I will not go below 5K, even if I just have to sit on them. I have other small pistol primers as well. I have enough primers to shoot 6 months and not bother my rainy day stock, as it should be.

Yep. We may have to wait a little bit, but they will come back, just like they did after the big run last time, even though it seemed like they never would. We will not see that again any time soon, not to that degree, or even close.

CCIs have been in and out of stock since spring. What's making it worse is people freaking out and ordering tens of thousands when they can get by w/ a few thousand. We're going to create our own problems if people hoard instead of buying a smaller quantity.
This isn't to say I'm mad at someone that's being proactive and looking ahead a few years. But I know there are still plenty of people sitting on a hoard from '08. One of them is a friend who hasn't loaded one round since then

You gotta be quick. PV had the CCI 500 for some time, then they didn't, then yesterday morning they did. This morning they don't. Still $26 per K though.
I can tell you Winchester apparently is having a price raise. Now my range isn't cheap for them but the price is going from 35 to 38. Now whether this is my range or Winchester, I have no idea.

We're hearing this same song and dance routine, just like last time when primers went south. It doesn't sound like anyone listened does it!! "Woe is me, their out again, woe is me". But when they had the chance to stock up.... where were they? HUH? Waiting for someone to take them by the hand and remind them.... who wipes your nose for you?

The key is to buy enough and make a special order.
I got a very good price on my order when we bought a lot of them at once. I got about a $8/1000 discount for the order. BUT, I called them up. Asked specifically about APS primers, I had to wait for them to get them in and I bought a lot at once.
Please, though, if you buy in bulk like I did. Sort out BEFOREHAND how you are going to store them and meet your fire codes. There are limits to how many you can store per residence and you need to find some friends to store 10,000 primers here and there so to speak.

Not everybody can or wants to buy 10,000 primers at a time.
I shoot a fair amount and my pension lets me buy 1 or 2 thousand at a time.
As far as CCI goes, yes the SPP seem to be gone around here too, but all other brands are in good supply in all sizes.

More often than not when buying a large quantity it is a matter of several reloaders going in together on a large order. There was a time when myself and several friends would order tens of thousands of primers, bullets and powders in large quantities and get really good pricing deals. So while not everyone can easily afford to drop $500 or more buying reloading supplies if several people pool their resources a good deal for all can be had. The same holds true for good cigars.
