My buddy started eyeing my Glock 19 the other day...

he possibly wants to buy it from me. After selling some stuff
and pooling some cash, I think I would have about $500ish
to work with.
What I want:

--Autoloader

--.40, 9mm, or .45

--could be used for CCW

--Is a VERY fun and easy gun to shoot

--reliable quality

The reason for thinking about selling:
I didn't enjoy shooting it as much as my 17C. Another factor is that the
wife hated it, and didn't enjoy shooting it. And I just wouldn't mind trying
something else for the sheer heck of it. So long as I don't go DOWN
in quality.
Thoughts?
Ideas?
Snide remarks?

Something with different sized grips/palmswells so you and your wife could shoot it if you have different hand sizes might be good. S&W M&P is a good one for that price. (I like mine anyway).

I'd keep the Glock 19. Fits all the criteria your describing.

But to address your poll:

in 9mm the Glock 19 or Beretta 92FS
in .40 the The Sig226/229 or HK but I prefer the P2000
in .45 1911 Kimber, Springfield, Colt in your price range

Sounds like you are wanting something steel that will absorb more of the recoil.

Off of your list I would have to go with a CZ 75B or SP-01.

Any gun can be used for CCW if you do your part, so I'm not really worrying about that.

I did vote that you were an imbecile and should just keep the Glock 19 though.:neener:

Check out the FNP9. It is a poly frame auto that comes in 45, 40, and 9. They can be bought off gunbroker for less than 400. FN has a stellar reputation for making quality firearms.

yes. Call me a wimp. Odd that I really didn't mind shooting
my bro in laws raptor II tho... and I like my buddies USP .45 ...although
it was dang huge in my ..femmy...hands. :p
I have to admit Sigs intrigue me with all the love around here.
CZs too, tho I wonder how they fit in my girlie hands.

Either a CZ or the new Ruger SR9. Think about it. G-d wants you to have this gun.

My wife has a 9mm compact Baby Eagle that is a dream to shoot. It is a steal framed gun that most everyone who shoots it offers to buy it, and one buddy of mine went and bought his own. It is easy to carry, is roughly the same size as a Glock 19, it is a tack driver and you should be able to find one brand spankin' new in the $400-$500 range depending on where you live.

CZ P-01 or Sig 228 if you want a traditional DA/SA with metal frame and compact size. I recommend that you also take a look at the new S&W M&P if you like striker fired polymer framed pistols like the GLOCK.

I usually advocate using 9mm, but that is personal preference. It's lighter and less bulky for easier storage and transport of ammunition, its easier on the wallet for training time, and with modern day ammunition like the Gold Dot or Ranger Talon it has a VERY good record in law enforcement shootings.

I voted for "other" but just barely

You don't really specify the "-ish" part. ;) How far are you willing to go on either (but mostly the high) side of the $500? The SIG pistols you mentioned are around $550 used, plus sales tax. While they are very accurate and reliable, I personally don't shoot them all that well, due to their fat grips and long-reach DA triggers. And I own a P228.

For right around, or a little over, $500, I really like the S&W M&P pistols. BUT -- nothing on that list is substantially better than that Glock 19 (I've had one for years) you have now, either. The Smith (in my case a 9mm compact) only wins out because of ergonomics, i.e., it feels better.

I'd go with the XD compact series, 4" barrel with a shortened grip frame, so it will work for CCW. They also come with a 13 round magazine with an extended butplate on it, and a flush fitting 10 round magazine. Pretty cool deal if you ask me. :D

9mm compact = 16 rounds
40 S&W compact = 12 rounds
45 compact = 13 rounds

honestly, I don't mind buying used.
I like the Sigs...I've seen a few on gunbroker for the
500ish I've been kinda looking for. There's also a gunshow this
weekend, and that never hurts anything.
As for the XDs ...I know people like them...but it's like...
an ugly chick with a great personality, ya know?
I'll go fondle one before I say more then that. :D
What's the trigger break like on these guns that you are all
recommending? (look who's talking...a Glock owner...)

I'm a big fan of the 1911's I have a Taurus PT1911. No it's not really ideal for CCW but It's a range queen and lots of fun. No one that shots it has wanted to put it down!

Hard to pick just one. I voted SIG because I own two of them and love 'em. Can't go wrong with a USP or 1911 either though.

With changeable backstraps, and the current mail in rebate good for $50 back plus two more full capacity magazines (on top of the two that come with the gun) a S&W M&P is hard to beat right now.

Of course I'd not overlook a good used BHP, SIG, Colt 1911 / 1991, Kimber 1911 or Springfield 1911. The recent crop of police contract overrun Beretta 92FS pistols with three 15 round mags are going for $500 or less most places and are a great buy if you like the 92FS. New CZs are almost always priced competitively as well. Get what fits your hand best that you like best.

We can give you ideas but you're gonna be the one carrying & shooting it.

Sw-mp

Commander You just cannot beat the MP! I have the 9mm and .40 MP they are the kind of gun you just want to shoot all the time.:D Very ergonomic! Well balanced, Excellent shooter. The trigger is a good one! If your wife is recoil sensitive, the MP is the best at low recoil. The gun sits perfect in your hand. [get a 9mm-hardly any recoil] I am going to get their .45 version while the sale is on. Like ugaarguy said, you get 4 [four] full size mags free! I say Run, do not walk to your Gun dealer and get the SW-MP.:D

The Best to You and Yours!

How about a new Glock in a different size or caliber? If you have one, you probably like them and if you're thinking about selling it, you probably wouldn't mind a different one.

Hey Fellas,

I have to admit, my biggest fears with the Beretta and the CZ75 are how well they would fit in my hands. I like them both, but have not found one yet that fits the hands so well...they feel huge to me.
I'll look at the Smith M&Ps since they are getting so many nods, but I hesitate at another polymer-frame. I don't mind a little extra weight to keep the recoil down. This is also why another Glock
doesn't seem to fit the bill...the 19 just isn't as fun to shoot as my last one...but then maybe it's my own stupid fault for getting the 17C. I think the thing that prompted me to consider my buddies interest
in my Glock is a signature I've seen on here by..Jeff Cooper is it? He said something to the effect of "if you aren't getting the chills from shooting your weapon every time it goes off then you will never be
truly effective with it." I found myself blasting thru ammo with the 17C, but I found myself disgruntled after 15-20 rounds thru the 19. Again, probably my own stupid fault for assuming they'd be similar
due to them both being Glocks. The only reason I ditched the 17C is because it's a nightstand gun, and I was told that the compensator would totally ruin my night vision/sight picture after one shot.
But I'd love to find another one someday...what a sweet 9 it was...

If you are interested in Jeff Cooper's opinions, he liked the CZ 75 line of pistols very much and considered them to be the best of the 9mms. Try the classic CZ 75b and see if you like it. If not, CZ designed the P-01 to be the replacement for the 75b which has better ergonomics to the grip and a better trigger design. However, the P-01 is a very light pistol with a low bore axis and using hot loads like 9mm NATO which is a 124gr bullet at 1250fps gets a little tiring after a while at the range. Regardless, the P-01 is my favorite CZ. It's one of those pistols that you put in your hand and shoot and you are indeed "wowed". If you don't like having a decocker which is on the P-01 and instead want a manual safety for cocked & locked carry, there is also the CZ 75 compact. I prefer the decocker because I like to be able to pull my pistol quickly and only worry about pulling the trigger to fire, with cocked & locked you have an extra step in disengaging the safety before you can pull the trigger and fire. There is a reason why law enforcment do NOT want safeties on their sidearms......under stress it can get you killed.

Be aware that the CZ comes from the factory with a gritty trigger and decocker(if you get a decocker model). However, after some dry firing(with snap caps) and range time it smooths out VERY nicely. The CZ has a very consistant trigger pull throughout making it accurate in both double action and single action.
