To the collection... WHY? Some of you may ask? I have not a clue!!!

Even though I currently own 9mms, a 40 cal, 45 ACP's, 38's, and 357's there is some part of me that wants a 38 super...

It does absolutely nothing that cannot be accomplished by the others cheaper, BUT for whatever reason, the idea of a 1911 chambered in 38 super just won't go away even though I have no rational need/use for it.

This is somebody's fault, i suppose that damn salesman (now a close friend) who sold me that first gun (P22) 3 years ago!!!... Damn him!

Read Stephen Hunter's book, "Havana", and you'll want the Super even more. Another reason to covet the Colt Super .38 is their offering in bright stainless steel. I bought one for my wife years ago for an anniversary present, and later got her an engraved one. It is hard to find a more classical and beautiful gun than these Colt high polished .38 Supers. Of couse, my plain jane 50's model with swapped out parts, worn finish, and carved grips is all the "fun" gun I need for an afternoon in the woods. Of course, I load my own (and my wife's), so the cost of ammo is only slightly over that of reloaded 9mm ammo. Go for it!

You will love it. I don't reload and keep hearing how hard it is to find ammo, I have not had any problem finding ammo and not at a high price. I can buy Fiocchi 50 a box for under $20. Antway it is a must if you like 1911's.

Super 38, there are a variety of 9mm, you can get a Steyr or a 9 Largo

Tok, the little round that can (at 1500 fps) and right now you can get the TTC (the soviets ode to JMB) and 1280 of ammo for less that 300 at together. a 1911 is pretty universal if you want to build, they make a barrel for just about every round

Nothing wrong with that at all. I'm wanting a strange rifle cartridge like a .280 AI or a 7mm STW. Something like that. I have plenty for deer hunting too. I just want something weird. I handload though, so ammo price and availability isn't really an issue.

thanks for the.... encouraging guys... sheesh, I sure can count on y'all to talk me out of things....

And, Shadow 7D, that reminds me, I have the tok too.. a TT-33...

The 38 Super is popular south of the border as some countries dont allow anything in a cartridge used by the military. The Super is a good round and makes it easy to push a hollow point fast enough to expand every time. Sort of like a ten shot 357 mag.

American Rifleman has an article in this months issue on the .38 super if I remember correctly. It should wet your appetite a bit more. Perfect advice coming form another gun addict. I never made it past the first step. Too hard! Keep up the good fight for the rest of us.

I like strange cartridges. Currently, .41 Mag, .45LC, and 10mm.

As long as you are a handloader, setting up for a new cartidge is no big deal. Enjoy. :)

Always wanted a 1911 in 38 super myself. You can buy me one while you're at it :)

Any recommendations as to 1911's chambered in 38 super to consider? I currently own a couple of 1911's.. A Kimber custom II in 40 cal, a Taurus PT1911 in 45ACP... I am wanting to add the 38 super and one in 9mm to sort of round them out...

30 luger
30 mauser
8mm
20mm, even 30mm
they are derringers from Scandinavia, I wouldn't want to fire one personally.
45-70, also single shot derringer.

Plenty of weird ones, even 38APC, but then 38 super seems mainline, you can find it if you look, hell lots of it.

PT1911, for your information, adding a 9mm barrel and magazine to a .38 Super 1911 is usually all you need to convert one gun to the other caliber. You could buy one pistol, and shoot both calibers. I'd suggest a Colt Government stainless. You can also get a 10mm 1911 to shoot .38 Super with just a barrel, lighter spring and magazine for .38 super.

Damnit!!!.. I forgot about the 10mm... one more 1911 I just HAVE to throw into the mix one of these days...

Just when I finally get my original "list" covered i go ahead and make another... the 10mm 1911 makes number 10 or so on my NEW list.

Hi Shadow7D,

You'd mentioned in passing -

Super 38, there are a variety of 9mm, you can get a Steyr or a 9 Largo

This is not correct.

While those Pistols will chamber and fire .38 Super, their intended Ammunition is on par with the earlier .38 ACP.

.38 Super will be too powerful for them, and can or will harm the Pistol.

Those Pistols should not be used with .38 Super ( even if some people here and there appear to have gotten away with it now and then ).

Me..
Super 38; there are a variety of 9mm, you can get a Steyr or a 9 Largo

Sorry for the poor grammar, I know the differences in caliber, and was simply pointing out that there are a variety of 9mm family cartridges that are similar to the the Super 38, but even more 'strange'

10mm.........then get a 9x25 barrel. Two great cartridges, although I don' find the 10mm to be "different". The 9x25 though............
